    Notes: The frequency shifting of an ultrashort (femtosecond) low intensity laser pulse in the presence of a plasma wave is investigated using particle simulations. One-dimensional simulations confirm the existence of photon trajectories similar to the trajectories of trapped or untrapped charged particles in a plasma wave. In the case when a plasma wake is produced by a relativistically intense laser pulse with a duration of the order of one plasma period, some full oscillations of the photon frequency take place only for the untrapped photons moving backward in the plasma wave frame before the intense laser pulse depletion due to the energy transfer to the plasma wake occurs. An analytical estimate of the probe pulse phase and frequency shift in two-dimensional (2-D) axially symmetrical plasma wake is performed. Axially symmetrical particle simulations in 2-D, with experimentally attainable parameters, display a frequency shift of the probe pulse of a few percent. In these analytical estimates and 2-D simulations special attention has been given to the modeling of the probe pulse optical collecting line that is typically used in plasma diagnostics. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Moreover, when injected to foodsatiated cats, these compounds made them resume eating voraciously. Pentobarbital also stimulated food intake, but was much less potent than the benzodiazepines tested.

    Notes: Summary This paper describes an attempt to define mesoscale daily precipitation and temperature regimes over Sardinia and their relation to different synoptic patterns. In order to address this task an extensive Cluster Analysis was performed on the whole data set using a number of methods, each including several distance measures. Thirty years of daily data, for the period ranging from 1951 to 1980 for the 114 stations with precipitation and 20 with temperature, were used in the study. In order to retrieve homogeneous clusters, non-hierarchical methods were found to be more effective and the use of a correlation-like distance was more effective for precipitation. To discriminate between the different clusters, the corresponding mean mass fields for the 500 hPa height and sea level pressure were used and an analysis of synoptic situations linked to mesoscale regimes was performed. The results show that at least two mean surface patterns exist corresponding to clearly different synoptic situations. Nevertheless, physical considerations led us to consider three distinct clusters, two of which correspond to specific synoptic circulations with slight, but meteorologically significant, differences.

    Notes: Abstract: It is well established that, at sub-relativistic intensities, the absorption of laser light by underdense plasmas decreases with increasing pulse intensity as interaction enters a non-linear regime. On the other hand, as the relativistic interaction regime is reached, further absorption mechanisms can be activated which can account for a substantial energy transfer. Using the particle code WAKE, we performed numerical simulations of the relativistic interaction of intense laser pulses with underdense plasmas in conditions that can be experimentally tested. Our simulations show that, while the relativistic laser intensity generates a population of fast electrons, a considerable fraction of the pulse energy goes into a population of thermal electrons. These findings open new possibilities for a direct observation of relativistic interaction processes using high resolution soft X-ray techniques.
