    Notes: Displacement rates of normal faults deduced from stratigraphic data are often unreliable. Here we calculate the velocity of motion on a normal fault from the variations in accommodation potential on both sides of the fault within a high-resolution time-frame established by biostratigraphy and physical stratigraphy. Our example is the Ornon normal fault bounding the Early Jurassic Bourg-d'Oisans Basin formed during Tethyan rifting. We show that motion on the fault was discontinuous when examined at high resolution and over a long time interval. During a first interval (Hettangian to Sinemurian Arietites bucklandi zone) a low rate of displacement (=202–423 m Myr−1) coeval with diffused extensional deformation throughout the sedimentary basin is observed. A second interval of localized deformation (Early Sinemurian Caenisites turneri zone) is characterized by higher rates of displacement on the fault (1846 m Myr−1). Our results concur with recent numerical models identifying the main stages of extensional deformation.

    Notes: Developmental plasticity is one main adaptative response of plants to the availability of nutrients. In the present study, the naturally occurring variation existing in Arabidopsis for the growth responses to phosphate availability was investigated. Initially details of the effects of phosphate starvation for the four currently used accessions Cvi, Col, Ler and Ws were compared. A set of 10 growth parameters, concerning the aerial part and the root system, was measured in both single-point and time-course experiments. The length of the primary root and the number of laterals were found to be consistently reduced by phosphate starvation in all four accessions. These two robust parameters were selected to further screen a set of 73 accessions originating from a wide range of habitats. One-half of the accessions showed also a reduced primary root and less lateral roots when phosphate-starved, and 25% were not responsive to phosphate availability. For the last quarter of accessions, phosphate starvation was found to affect only one of the two growth parameters, indicating the occurrence of different adaptative strategies. These accessions appear to offer new tools to investigate the molecular basis of the corresponding growth responses to phosphate availability.

    Notes: Summary A method of computed tomography (CT) image analysis of lumbar vertebrae has been developed, providing a visualization of the trabecular network as it is represented in a 1.5 mm-thick CT image. We measured the length of the network and the number of discontinuities found in the image. The ratio of these measurements was called the “trabecular fragmentation index” (TFI). CT images from 71 women between the ages of 50 and 59, and 94 women between the ages of 60 and 69 were divided into three groups according to quantitative computed tomography (QCT) vertebral density and to the presence or absence of crushing and fractures. The measure of the network length versus the vertebral area was significantly higher in normal subjects than in osteoporotics. A TFI threshold at 0.195 could separate the normal subjects, regardless of the decade, from osteoporotic ones. In females between 50 and 69 years of age, TFI was 0.166 (SD=0.031) for the normal group and 0.248 (SD=0.082) for osteoporotics. The osteopenic group without fractures but low bone mineral density (BMD) showed an intermediate TFI of 0.195 (SD=0.05), placing this population on both sides of the threshold. Correlation between TFI and BMD was only-0.60. TFI could provide new information in vivo about the state of trabecular structure, particularly in the osteopenic group.
