Notes: Hallervorden-Spatz disease is a rare autosomal recessive disorder in which dopaminergic deficiency in the substantia nigra and its nigrostriatal projection has been identified. It is characterised by a slow but progressive course culminating in death. This case report describes a 13-year-old male, with a clinical diagnosis of Hallervorden-Spatz disease, who developed recurrent episodes of an acute illness, the features of which closely resembled those of the neuroleptic malignant syndrome. However, in this patient there had been no exposure to neuroleptic medication. The clinical events in this case suggest that dopaminergic hypoactivity, which is characteristic of Hallervorden-Spatz disease, can trigger episodes of neuroleptic malignant syndrome.

Notes: Abstract Ducussated nerve fibers at the optic chiasma were studied using an orthograde fast axonal transport technique. Decussation was almost complete in both albino and colored rabbits. A slight rise in radioactivity noted in the ipsilateral retro-chiasmal optic tract was discussed in relation to non-axonal transport, detoured nerve fibers, or contaminated suprachiasmatic nucleus fragments.

Notes: Abstract Blockage of axonal protein transport in intraocular hypertensive primates (Macaca irus) was studied autoradiographically and quantitatively and the findings compared with our previous work on rabbits. Fast axonal transport was blocked at two points, at the lamina scleralis and at the edge of posterior scleral foramen, and reduced by 25% when intraocular pressure of 50 mmHg continued for 6 h. The importance of the blockage at the lamina scleralis and at the edge of scleral foramen for the explanation of paracentral scotomas and the peripheral nasal step (Rønne) is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Mechanically damaged ciliary epithelium in aphakic and pseudophakic rabbit eyes was studied for up to 2 years after extracapsular lens extraction. Histopathological examination of the epithelium revealed more severe damage in pseudophakic eyes. The nonpigmented epithelium (NE) was missing from the middle to basal portion of each ciliary process. Regenerative ability of the NE was extremely poor. The damaged NE continued to disappear for at least 2 years, and only the pigmented epithelium (PE) covered the stroma. In some of the affected areas, the stroma of the ciliary body (CB) was substituted by fibrous materials.

Notes: Abstract Ion-release of the rabbit vitreous body through a dialysis membrane against water was studied. To evaluate one of thermal changes in the vitreous properties, the vitreous was heated or cooled before dialysis. The average wet weight of the normal vitreous was 1.61±0.20 g and dry to wet weight ratio was 1.33±0.04%. The dry weight, sodium, potassium, and chloride concentrations of the vitreous were decreased as an exponential function curve by dialysis. A decreasing ratio was prominent in the heated vitreous, the frozen vitreous and the non-thermo-treated (control) vitreous in turn. Calcium and magnesium release from the rabbit vitreous body was slow and differences among the heated, frozen and non-thermo-treated vitreous bodies were not significant, suggesting some different capture-mechanisms between the monovalent and bivalent ions.
