    Notes: Abstract  Gas chromatography and the determination of natural isotope ratios are powerful analytical methods which can be used to check the authenticity of alcoholic beverages and to detect any adulteration. To check the origin and the authenticity of commercial fruit spirits, whiskies, etc., 197 samples were analysed by gas chromatography, 2H-NMR and 13C isotope mass spectrometry. The discrimination between different varieties was demonstrated by bivariate and multivariate discriminant analysis using different concentrations of volatile compounds such as methanol, butan-1-ol, 2- and 3-methyl-butanol, benzaldehyde and hexanol as well as isotopic data like (D/H)I, (D/H)II and 13C/12C isotopomers of ethanol. The results show that by using multivariate discriminant analysis it is possible to distinguish not only between different groups of spirits, e.g. those made of stone-fruit, malaceous fruit, grain and corn, but also between individual varieties, such as cherry, plum, mirabelle and apple. If the detection of highly rectified ethyl alcohol of agricultural origin and the identification of its raw materials are required, then natural isotope ratios are the only discriminant analytical parameters available.

    Notes: Regioregular poly(3-(4′-(1″,4″,7″-trioxaoctyl)phenyl)thiophenes) (PEOPTs) exhibit interesting properties for the use in polymer electronics. Exposing thin films of the amorphous, disordered phase (orange phase) of the "as prepared" polymer to chloroform vapor or annealing them by heat treatment results in a redshift of the absorption maximum due to the formation of nanocrystals in an ordered phase (blue phase). As such, PEOPT thus is a very interesting conjugated polymeric material, which exhibits two different phases with well-defined order/disorder characters on one-and-the-same material. This property opens up the unique possibility to investigate the role of order/disorder on the photoexcited pattern without being obscured by the differences in chemical structure by using different materials with different crystallinity. The fact, that blue phase PEOPT exhibits absorption edges at relatively low energies around 1.8 eV, thereby demonstrating an enhanced spectral absorption range as compared to the orange phase, makes them attractive for use in photodiodes and solar cells as well. The photoinduced charge generation efficiency in both phases of PEOPT is significantly enhanced by the addition of a strong electron acceptor such as fullerene C60, as observed by quenching of the luminescence and by photoinduced absorption measurements in the infrared and uv–visible regime. The average number and the lifetime of photoinduced carriers in composites of PEOPT with a methanofullerene [6,6]-phenyl C61–butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) are found to depend on the crystallinity of PEOPT in thin films, which gives rise to charged photoexcitations delocalized between polymer chains. Stronger bimolecular recombination in composites of the blue phase PEOPT with PCBM is observed as compared to the orange phase PEOPT/PCBM films. The origin of this enhanced recombination is found to be related to the hole mobility of the polymer. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary: Major histocompatibility complex class II antigen presentation requires the participation of lysosomal proteases in two convergent processes. First, the antigens endocytosed by the antigen-presenting cells must be broken down into antigenic peptides. Second, class II tnolecules are synthesized with their peptide-binding site blocked by invariant chain (li), and they acquire the capacity to bind antigens only after Ii has been degraded in the compartments where peptides reside. The study of genetically modified tnice deficietit in single lysosomal proteases has allowed us to determine their role in these processes, Cathepsins (Cat) B and D. previously considered major players in MHC class II antigen presentation, are dispensable for degradation of Ii and for generation of several antigenic determinants. By contrast, Cat S plays an essential role in removal of Ii in B cells and dendritic cells, whereas Cat L apparently does so in thymic epithelial cells. Accordingly, the absence of Cat S and L have major consequences for the onset of humoral immtine responses and for T-cell selection, respectively. It is likely that other as yet uncharacterized lysosomal enzymes also play a role in Ii degradation and in generation of antigenic determinants. Experiments involving drugs that interfere with protein traffic suggest that more than one mechanism for Ii removal, probably involving different proteases, can co-exist in the same antigen-presenting cell. These findings may allow the development of protease inhibitors with possible therapeutic applications.

    Notes: Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the associations of different periodontal parameters with cerebral ischemia.Methods: In a case–control study, 303 consecutive patients with ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack, and 300 representative population controls received a complete clinical and radiographic dental examination. Patients were examined on average 3 days after ischemia. The individual mean clinical attachment loss measured at four sites per tooth was used as indicator variable for periodontitis.Results: Patients had higher clinical attachment loss than population (p〈0.001). After adjustment for age, gender, number of teeth, vascular risk factors and diseases, childhood and adult socioeconomic conditions and lifestyle factors, a mean clinical attachment loss 〉6 mm had a 7.4 times (95% confidence interval 1.55–15.3) a gingival index 〉1.2 a 18.3 times (5.84–57.26) and a radiographic bone loss a 3.6 times (1.58–8.28) higher risk of cerebral ischemia than subjects without periodontitis or gingivitis, respectively.Conclusion: Periodontitis is an independent risk factor for cerebral ischemia and acute exacerbation of inflammatory processes in the periodontium might be a trigger for the event of cerebral ischemia.

    Notes: Percutaneous transcatheter closure has been proposed as an alternative to surgical closure or long-term anticoagulation in patients with presumed paradoxical embolism and patent foramen ovale (PFO). We report our mid-term results of 55 consecutive symptomatic patients (mean age: 47 years, range: 20–79) who underwent percutaneous transcatheter closure of PFO after at least one event of cerebral ischemia; 16 (29%) patients had at least one transient ischemic attack and 39 (71%) patients at least one embolic stroke. Multiple embolic events had occurred in 6 (11%) patients. Percutaneous transcatheter closure was technically successful in all 55 patients (100%). For the majority of patients, an Amplatzer PFO occluder measuring 25 mm in diameter (n = 49) or an Amplatzer PFO occluder measuring 35 mm in diameter (n = 6) was used. Complete occlusion by color Doppler and transesophageal contrast echocardiography investigation was achieved in 96% at follow-up 3-6 months after implantation; only 2 patients had a trivial residual shunt at follow-up. Mean fluoroscopy time was 6.7 minutes (range: 1.7–47.1), and in-hospital follow-up was uneventful except for 1 patient who developed a cardiac tamponade requiring uneventful and successful needle pericardiocentesis. At a mean follow-up of 19 months (range: 3–32) no recurrent embolic neurological events was observed. Transcatheter closure of PFO with Amplatzer PFO occluder devices is a safe and effective therapy for patients with previous paradoxical embolism and aneurysmatic or nonaneurysmatic PFO. Percutaneous closure is associated with a high success rate, low incidence of hospital complications, and freedom of cerebral ischemia events.

    Notes: Abstract  Background: Endovascular stent-graft placement is a new concept for the treatment of aortic dissection and aneurysm. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) with established diagnostic features may be instrumental in guiding endovascular procedures. Methods: We performed IVUS and digital angiography before, during, and after implantation of 47 stent grafts in 40 patients with Stanford type B dissection (26 patients, 28 stent grafts), thoracic aneurysm (9 patients, 11 stent grafts), and abdominal aneurysm (5 patients, 8 stent grafts). Results: IVUS could clearly identify the aortic anatomy and differentiate between true and false lumen in all cases of dissection. In four patients with type B dissection extending from the thoracic to the abdominal aorta the true lumen was exclusively identified by IVUS, and thus, essential for safe execution of the procedure. In another patient stent-graft placement in the aorta was optimized by covering a second entry detected by IVUS, but undetected by angiography. The site of stent implantation, the true and false lumen, as well as entry and reentry were always identified in both thoracic and abdominal aorta. In comparison with angiography, IVUS information led to additional balloon molding due to incomplete stent apposition in seven cases. Conclusions: As an adjunctive imaging modality IVUS is likely to improve stent-graft placement in aortic type B dissection, especially in patients with abdominal extension.

    Notes: The insertion of thin interlayers of LiF under the negative metal electrode (Al and Au) of bulk heterojunction solar cells significantly enhances the fill factor and stabilizes high open circuit voltages. Compared to devices without the LiF interfacial layer, the white light efficiencies increase by over 20% up to ηeff∼3.3%. Substitution of the LiF by another insulating interlayer SiOx results in lower overall efficiencies. In the case of a LiF/Au electrode, substantial efficiency enhancement is observed compared to a pristine Au electrode and white light efficiencies up to ηeff∼2.3% are reported.© 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Clinical studies show that polarity reversal affects de-fibrillation success in transvenous monophasic defibrillators. Current devices use biphasic shocks for de-fibrillation. We investigated in a porcine animal model whether polarity reversal influences de-fibrillation success with biphasic shocks. In nine anesthetized, ventilated pigs, the de-fibrillation efficacy of biphasic shocks (14.3 ms and 10.8 ms pulse duration) with “initial polarity” (IP, distal electrode = cathode) and “reversed polarity” (RP, distal electrode = anode) delivered via a transvenous/subcutaneous lead system was compared. Voltage and current of each defibrillating pulse were recorded on an oscilloscope and impedance calculated as voltage divided by current. Cumulative de-fibrillation success was significantly higher for RP than for IP for both pulse durations (55% vs 44%, P = 0.019) for 14.3 ms (57% vs 45%, P 〈 0.05) and insignificantly higher for 10.8 ms (52% vs 42%, P = n.s.). Impedance was significantly lower with RP at the trailing edge of pulse 1 (IP: 44 ± 8.4 vs RP: 37 ± 9.3 with 14.3 ms, P 〈 0.001 and IP: 44 ± 6.2 vs RP: 41 ± 7.6 Ω with 10.8 ms, P 〈 0.001) and the leading edge of pulse 2 (IP: 37 ± 5 vs RP: 35 ± 4.2 Ω with 14.3 ms, P = 0.05 and IP: 37.5 ± 3.7 vs RP: 36 ± 5 Ω with 10.8 ms, P = 0.02). In conclusion, in this animal model, internal de-fibrillation using the distal coil as anode results in higher de-fibrillation efficacy than using the distal coil as cathode. Calculated impedances show different courses throughout the shock pulses suggesting differences in current flow during the shock.
