    Notizen: We describe the design and development of a large format 40-mm active diameter imaging photon detector. The design comprises an S20 semitransparent photocathode proximity focused onto a stack of two microchannel plates clamped back to back having channel length to diameter ratios of 80:1. Event readout is facilitated by a circular arc terminated resistive anode. The theoretical performance of the design is discussed with reference to gain measurements of the microchannel plates. Experimental results give an optimum position resolution of 100 μm which is spatially nonuniform and degrades towards the edge of the imaging field. We discuss the role of signal processing in this nonuniformity and describe design modifications which would achieve optimum imaging performance.

    Notizen: We have evaluated the performance of the first RANICON to be processed with a GaAs photocathode. We discuss the design characteristics of this prototype detector and present experimental results showing an overall detector resolution of 76 μm FWHM, yielding a value for VR , the radial emission energy of a photoelectron, of 0.09 eV for the GaAs photocathode. On the basis of these figures, we discuss techniques for optimizing and improving the spatial resolution of GaAs-photocathode RANICONs.

    Notizen: Abstract In this paper we present multicolor images of the Beta Pictoris disk, obtained with a new Coronograph, built at STScI, for ESO's New Technology Telescope. These B, V, and R observations probe the Beta Pictoris circumstellar disk in to a distance of 35 AU (2”) from the central star. We derive surface brightness profiles for the disk and discuss the results in the context of two-component disk models (e.g. Backmanet al. 1992), which are based on fits to available optical and infrared data for Beta Pictoris's disk. These models generally imply that the disk is composed of 1) an outer disk extending from 100–1000 AU, with a midplane particle density decreasing as n(r) α r−3, 2) a transition region extending from 10–100 AU with lower density and either smaller grains or a less steep spatial gradient than the outer component, 3) an innermost “clear” zone with even lower density.

    Notizen: Abstract We report new coronagraphic observations of theβ Pictoris circumstellar disk with the JHU Adaptive Optics Coronagraph. We are able to image the inner region of the disk to a radius of 40 AU from the star, and find an abrupt change in the gradient of the disk's midplane surface brightness at ∼ 100 AU. Our results are consistent with recently published models which propose two disk components in order to unify optical, IR and IRAS data.
