We have evaluated the performance of the first RANICON to be processed with a GaAs photocathode. We discuss the design characteristics of this prototype detector and present experimental results showing an overall detector resolution of 76 μm FWHM, yielding a value for VR , the radial emission energy of a photoelectron, of 0.09 eV for the GaAs photocathode. On the basis of these figures, we discuss techniques for optimizing and improving the spatial resolution of GaAs-photocathode RANICONs.
