Exceptionally large numbers (Metopolophium dirhodum were observed i n the air over south-east England, and caught in suction traps, during July 1979. Meteorological data show that these aphids were probably derived from a native population, increasing exponentially at a time when weather, predators and disease did not impose any significant limitation on the rate of increase, and that few, if any, of these aphids were of continental origin.
