    Notes: Abstract: Activation of glial cells and the consequent release of cytokines, proteins, and other intercellular signaling molecules is a well-recognized phenomenon in brain injury and neurodegenerative disease. We and others have previously described an inducible prostaglandin G/H synthase, known as PGHS-2 or cyclooxygenase-2, that is up-regulated in many cell systems by cytokines and growth factors and down-regulated by glucocorticoid hormones. In cultured mouse astrocytes we observed increased production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) after stimulation with either interleukin-1β (IL-1β) or the protein kinase C activator phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (TPA). This increase in PGE2 content was blocked by pretreatment with dexamethasone and correlated with increases in cyclooxygenase activity measured at 4 h. Northern blots revealed concomitant increases in PGHS-2 mRNA levels that peaked at 2 h and were dependent on the dosage of IL-1β. Dexamethasone inhibited this induction of PGHS-2 mRNA by IL-1β. TPA, basic fibroblast growth factor, and the proinflammatory factors tumor necrosis factor α and lipopolysaccharide, but not interleukin-6, also stimulated PGHS-2 mRNA expression. Relative to IL-1β, the greater increases in PGE2 production and cyclooxygenase activity caused by TPA correlated with a greater induction of PGHS-2 mRNA. Furthermore, NS-398, a specific inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2, blocked 〉80% of the cyclooxygenase activity in TPA-treated astrocytes. These findings indicate that increased expression of PGHS-2 contributes to prostaglandin production in cultured astrocytes exposed to cytokines and other factors.

    Notes: Abstract Landau energy levels are determined from cyclotron resonance absorption data and compared to theoretical calculations. Energy level diagrams are presented to graphically display the nonequal energy level spacings and identify absorption transitions. This information is then used to make transition assignments responsible for the p-Ge laser signals seen by V. N. Shastin et al. and C. Kremser et al. This work suggests that the p-Ge laser yields signals via the following transitions: (a) the expected cyclotron transitions for Δn=1, (b) harmonic cyclotron transitions for Δn=2, 3, (c) light-to-heavy hole transitions and (d) light hole to acceptor level transitions. The material of this paper should be of aid in the study of the pumping-oscillation cycle of the p-Ge laser.

    Notes: Abstract The voltage standing wave on a coplanar waveguide (CPW) is measured at W-band (75–110 GHz) using an array of bismuth microbolometers placed over the CPW. From this information, the impedance at the end of the line can be determined in addition to the complex propagation constant of the CPW. This measurement technique should also be applicable for other planar transmission lines and be extendable above 110 GHz. This work represents the highest frequency, direct measurement of a VSW on a CPW made to date.

    Notes: Abstract The use of a Fabry-Perot Resonator to measure the surface resistance of bulk and thin film samples of YBa2Cu3O7-δ at W-band frequencies is described. The Fabry-Perot measurement technique provides a more convenient size, higher Q and is capable of determining the surface resistance more accurately than cylindrical resonators at these frequencies.

    Notes: Abstract Using new experimental data from modeling the p-Ge laser pulse plus literature data, basic laser parameters are obtained so that one can solve the laser equations of Pantell and Puthoff to obtain formulas for calculating all laser quantities of interest. Values, calculated using the formulas, such as gain, saturation intensity, pump population differences, power generated, output coupling, efficiency, etc. are in excellent agreement with available experimental data. This work contributes to problems in determining laser line transitions, the laser cycle, and the optimization of the laser performance.
