Notes: Summary The intergenic spacer of a rice ribosomal RNA gene repeating unit has been completely sequenced. The spacer contains three imperfect, direct repeated regions of 264–253 bp, followed by a related but more highly divergent region. Detailed analysis of the sequence allows the presentation of an evolutionary scenario in which the 264–253-bp repeats are derived from an ancestral 150-bp sequence by deletion and amplification. Comparison of the rice sequence with those of maize, wheat, and rye shows that, despite considerable divergence from the ancestral sequence, several regions have been highly conserved, suggesting that they may play an important role in the structure and/or expression of the ribosomal genes.

Notes: Abstract During a 30-month-period, 184 very low birth weight infants from two Liverpool neonatal intensive care units were screened for evidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Seventeen clinical variables previously considered relevant to the development of ROP, blood gas and blood pressure data over the first 7 days, and the maximum stage of ROP reached in either eye were recorded, together with the need for cryotherapy and current visual status. Ninety-two infants developed any stage of ROP and 15 required cryotherapy or became blind. Logistic regression showed that only gestational age and frequency of blood transfusion were independently associated both with the risk of occurrence of ROP and its severity.

Notes: Abstract Frequent blood transfusions may produce changes in iron status which can give rise to oxygen-derived free-radical (ODFR) generation and oxidative injury. Preterm infants developing chronic lung disease (CLD) receive significantly more transfusions. A total of 73 very preterm infants had weekly estimations of serum iron, transferrin, transferrin saturation, ferritin, caeruloplasmin, bleomycin detectable (‘free’) iron (BDI), and thiobarbituric acid reacting substances (TBARS) made over the first 28 days. Thirty infants remained oxygen dependent at 36 weeks postmenstrual age and were termed as having CLD. They were significantly lighter and less mature at birth and received more than twice as many transfusions during the 1st month. They had significantly lower transferrin levels initially but similar total iron and transferrin saturations as non-CLD infants. Ferritin and caeruloplasmin levels rose to significantly higher levels over the 1st month in CLD infants, and ferritin levels were significantly related to the number of transfusions given. Infants with higher ferritin levels were more likely to show BDI, although this was not associated with increased lipid peroxidation as evidenced by higher TBARS. Conclusion It is unlikely that oxidative injury from ODFRs induced by blood transfusion contributes to the risk of developing CLD in preterm infants.

Notes: Abstract Factors associated with survival and freedom from cerebral parenchymal lesions and severe retinopathy were examined in a cohort of 250 extremely preterm infants of less than 26 weeks gestation admitted to a regional neonatal intensive care unit between 1982 and 1993. There were 99 survivors of whom 73 were free of major early morbidity. Conclusion Logistic regression showed that both survival and survival free from early morbidity were independently related to gestation, birth weight, birth period and antenatal steroid prophylaxis.

Notes: : To quantify the effectiveness of best management practice (BMP) implementation on runoff, sediment, and nutrient yields from a watershed, the Nomini Creek watershed and water quality monitoring project was initiated in 1985, in Westmoreland County, Virginia. The changes in nonpoint source (NPS) loadings resulting from BMPs were evaluated by comparing selected parameters from data series obtained before, during, and after periods of BMP implementation. The results indicated that the watershed-averaged curve number, sediment, and nutrient (N and P) concentrations were reduced by approximately 5, 20, and 40 percent, respectively, due to BMP implementation. The nutrient yield model developed by Frere et al. (1980) was applied to the water quality parameters from 175 storms, but it failed to adequately describe the observed phenomena. Seasonal changes in nutrient availability factors were not consistent with field conditions, nor were they significantly different in the pm- and post-BMP periods. An extended period of monitoring, with intensive BMP implementation over a larger portion of the watershed, is required to identify BMP effectiveness.
