Abstract Although dedicated microcomputers have revolutionised the handling of data from automatic machines in scientific laboratories, there are often instances where the computer spends much of its time idle. Because it has to be ready to receive data when the device generates it, the computer cannot easily be released for other use in the laboratory. The paper describes an alternative approach, using microprocessors, in a dedicated interface to Commodore computers which, by using cassette tape storage, does not require electrical connection to the computer and only requires occasional attention from the operator.
