Notes: Summary The manufacture of materials products involves the control of a range of interacting physical phenomena. The material to be used is synthesised and then manipulated into some component form. The structure and properties of the final component are influenced by both interactions of continuum-scale phenomena and those at an atomistic-scale level. Moreover, during the processing phase there are some properties that cannot be measured (typically the liquid-solid phase change). However, it seems there is a potential to derive properties and other features from atomistic-scale simulations that are of key importance at the continuum scale. Some of the issues that need to be resolved in this context focus upon computational techniques and software tools facilitating: (i) the multiphysics modeling at continuum scale; (ii) the interaction and appropriate degrees of coupling between the atomistic through microstructure to continuum scale; and (iii) the exploitation of high-performance parallel computing power delivering simulation results in a practical time period. This paper discusses some of the attempts to address each of the above issues, particularly in the context of materials processing for manufacture.

Notes: Solder materials are used to provide a connection between electronic components and printed circuit boards (PCBs) using either the reflow or wave soldering process. As a board assembly passes through a reflow furnace the solder (initially in the form of solder paste) melts, reflows, then solidifies, and finally deforms between the chip and board. A number of defects may occur during this process such as flux entrapment, void formation, and cracking of the joint, chip or board. These defects are a serious concern to industry, especially with trends towards increasing component miniaturisation and smaller pitch sizes. This paper presents a modelling methodology for predicting solder joint shape, solidification, and deformation (stress) during the assembly process.

Notes: Abstract A fluid mechanical convective instability is examined under the conditions found in the solar corona. Linearized density perturbations are shown to grow as they are carried outward by the solar wind. The non-linear instability may be proposed as a cause of coronal structures in non-magnetic stars, or in regions of the solar corona with weak magnetic fields.

Notes: Abstract While risk aversion explains individual consumer demand for insurance, it does not explain the corporate demand for insurance. Studies have suggested a variety of incentives that motivate corporations to purchase insurance. We find that the primary motivation for corporate insurance purchases can be explained by the bondholder's me-first rule. In return for insurance, bondholders will charge stockholders a lower cost of debt, thereby increasing firm value.

Notes: Abstract Proposition 103, approved by California voters on November 8, 1988, allows California state-chartered banks to become vendors of life, health, and property-liability insurance products. It is hypothesized that such a regulatory realignment should have resulted in a wealth increase for California state-chartered banks. An examination of the market response among these banks indicates a statistically significant positive stock price response on the dates of passage of Proposition 103 and a subsequent Supreme Court ruling upholding its constitutionality.
