Notizen: In the last decade, the idea of common organization of certain ion channel families exhibiting diverse physiological and pharmacological properties has received strong experimental support. Transmembrane topologies and patterns of the pore-facing residues are conserved in P-loop channels that include high-selective cation channels and certain ligand-gated channels. X-ray structures of bacterial K+ channels, KcsA, MthK and KvAP, help to understand structure-function relationships of other P-loop channels. Data on binding sites and mechanisms of action of ligands of K+, Na+, Ca2+ and glutamate gated ion channels are considered in view of their possible structural similarity to the bacterial K+ channels. Emphasized are structural determinants of ligand–receptor interactions within the channels and mechanisms of state-dependent action of the ligands.

Notizen: Suggests that in many companies that have adopted value-based management, there is a need to shift the focus of management attention from the measurement of value, to the creation of wealth. Argues that shareholder wealth creation is a creative endeavour on the part of the management and employees of a business - and that wealth will only be created for shareholders if management delivers financial performance that exceeds market expectations. This requires the successful implementation of higher value strategies developed from new ideas - not simply the adoption of value-based measurement and incentive systems.

Notizen: The last 15 years or so have seen the emergence of a powerful management philosophy known as value-based management (VBM). The premiss underlying this philosophy is that management's primary responsibility is to maximize value for shareholders. Much of the work which has been done in this field has focused on value measurement rather than value creation. Argues that we need to shift the focus from value measurement to value creation and to do this, we need to accept that shareholder value creation is a creative act, not an analytical process. Value creation requires a combination of creative and analytical thinking skills. These skills can be developed, and if properly integrated into a hybrid thinking process, can lead to better strategies, better financial performance and much more satisfied employees.

Notizen: Abstract.  Atmospheric general circulation models (GCMs) are characterized by many features but especially by: (1) the manner of discretizing the governing equations and of representing the variables involved at a given resolution, and (2) the manner of parameterizing unresolved physical processes in terms of those resolved variables. These two aspects of model formulation are not independent and it is difficult to untangle their intertwined effects when assessing model performance. The attempt here is to separate these aspects of GCM behaviour and to ask, “Given a perfect parameterization of the physical processes in a model, what resolution is needed to capture the dominant dynamical aspects of the atmospheric climate?” Alternatively, “At what resolution do the dynamics of a GCM converge”? The perfect parameterization approach assumes that the calculation of the physical terms returns the “correct” result at all resolutions. In the idealized case, a time-independent forcing is one of the simplest that satisfies this condition. However, experiments show that it is difficult for the dynamics of a GCM to balance a time-independent forcing with atmosphere-like flows and structures. The model requires, and the atmosphere presumably includes, physical feedback mechanisms which act so as to maintain the kinds of flows and structures that are observed. Resolution experiments are performed with a simplified forcing function for the thermodynamic equation which combines a dominant time-independent specified forcing with a weak linear relaxation feedback. These experiments show that the dynamics of the GCM have essentially converged at T32 and certainly by T63 which is the next resolution considered. This is shown by the constancy of structures, variances, covariances, transports and energy budgets with increasing resolution. Experiments with an alternative forcing proposed by Held and Suarez, which has the form of a linear relaxation, show somewhat less evidence of convergence at these resolutions. In both cases the “physics” are known by assumption. However, the form and nature of the forcing is different, as is the behaviour with resolution. The implication for the real system is that the resolution required for simulating the dynamical aspects of climate is rather modest. The simulated climate does, however, apparently depend on the ability to correctly and consistently parameterize the physical processes in a GCM, involving both forcing and feedback mechanisms, as a function of resolution.

Notizen: Abstract Plasma tocopherol, plasma total lipid levels and tocopherol-lipid ratio were measured every 6 h during 48 h in 12 critically ill patients and compared with those of a control group. The patients were divided into two groups. Group I comprised 6 critically ill patients with ARDS and group II comprised 6 severely ill patients without ARDS. The means for all observations of plasma tocopherol, total lipid levels and tocopherol-lipid ratio in groups I and II were significantly depressed relative to a control group (p〈0.0001). The difference in the average tocopherol-lipid ratio between the three groups (p〈0.0001) and between the groups I and II was statistically significant (p〈0.0001). Our results indicated: (1) a decrease of vitamin E concentrations in the critically ill patients, particularly in ARDS patients; (2) the importance of the relationship between plasma tocopherol and plasma lipids levels in evaluating the deficiency in vitamin E which was evident in ARDS patients.
