Notes: The partner molecules of N,N-dimethylaniline–1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (1/1), C8H11N·C10H2N4, are stacked alternately in infinite columns. The N atom of the N,N-dimethylaniline molecule has a partially tetrahedral character and the distance between neighbouring molecules in the stack is relatively short on the side where the lone-pair electrons of this atom are located. Molecular-packing analysis of this and three other complexes of N,N-dimethylaniline shows that there is a close relationship between the strength of the intermolecular interaction on this side and the tetrahedral character of the N atom.

Notes: Values, meanings, and attitudes are deep motivators and controllersof human feelings, thinking, speech and action. In management by values, the primary focus is on developing, maintaining, and ensuring that theorganization members have healthy and productive values. In other wordsthe pivotal strategy is to ensure that the culture is strong. The ideais that once this criterion has been satisfied, the empowered employeeswill be self-managing and intrinsically motivated to make sure theyserve the customers well, productivity and quality are high, and theeconomic results are sound. Presents a case study of the service companyManpower Scandinavia, where this concept has been implementedpractically since 1984. Shows this has led to sustainable practicalbenefits in terms of a considerable long-term growth in gross turnover, high customer satisfaction, low employee turnover, virtually nil controlin the traditional sense, and high market share. Several of thesefactors have a direct positive bearing on productivity.

Notes: Abstract One of the main objectives in the information society is to improve the quality of life. — Paying attention to the needs of people seems to be a key element in good ethical behaviour, says Tor Dahl, Managing Director of Manpower Scandinavia. In defining these needs, Manpower used Abraham Maslow's famous pyramid, his hierarchy of needs, as a model for trying to satisfy in practise the needs on each level. However, they went a step further, asking; what comes after Maslow? To mean something for others; togetherness and that people can be trusted and that they seek a purpose with their work, came out as answers. In his paper Mr. Dahl tells us how Manpower Scandinavia has developed a written set of values, which function as a basis for action and guidelines for behaviour, and where the key idea behind it all is to let people be self-managed. Furthermore, he shows us how Manpower has organised the company according to this conviction. — If your really have faith in people and show them trust, they will show you trust in return. Then you have a good basis for ethical behaviour, Tor Dahl concludes his paper.

Notes: Abstract How do departmental chairpersons and deans in a major university setting manage their time? What are the major administrative activities and functions associated with such responsibilities? What relationships do these have with an ability to delegate, to control one's time for planning and self-initiated activities, or with a personal sense of productivity, enjoyment, and stress? This paper attempts to address these questions in the form of a time management case study, drawing on data from a staff development project for administrators in a college at a major American university. Through the use of a new sampling technique and traditional descriptive and parametric statistics, it is possible to identify, rapidly and with precision, a large number of variables that describe the work process as it relates to the above questions. The findings indicate that there is considerable commonality across individuals and that it is possible to deal with such issues as time management, job stress, and enjoyment on an organizational level.

Notes: Complete geometry optimizations using ab initio SCF/3-21G* calculations were performed on silatrane and azasilatrane, on their fluoro derivatives, and on methylsilatrane. By comparison with optimized geometries obtained for a series of model systems, the predicted transannular internuclear distances were interpreted in terms of the combined effects of electronegative substituents on Si and the anomeric interaction in the silatranes. The predicted geometries indicate that there is a weak transannular interaction in silatrane and a more significant one in azasilatrane, the predicted equilibrium distances being 2.66 and 2.15 Å, respectively. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
