    Notizen: Due to the presence of a population of heavy, negatively charged vortex elements, plasma becomes birefringent to a low frequency circularly polarized wave of infinitesimally small amplitude. The right circular polarization part remains dispersive whereas the left circular polarization part decays if the rotation associated with the vorticity is anticlockwise as seen by an observer looking antiparallel to the direction of the axis of rotation. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The instability of the large-scale motion of a thin layer of electron vortices produced by the interaction of intense laser pulse and a uniform plasma is studied here. The standard point vortex models and vortex sheet models of the flow field involve unphysical singularities in flow field, leading to ill-posed problems. To make the problem well posed a description in terms of vortex blobs is considered. If the vortex sheet has a smooth localized core then the linear growth rates rapidly decrease to zero at high wave numbers, thus providing a natural ultraviolet cutoff. Such a model can then be further used to study the development of small-scale inhomogeneity in the magnetic field produced by the ultraintense laser beam. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Axial magnetic field generation in a plasma due to ponderomotive action of an obliquely incident spatially inhomogeneous laser beam is discussed. The theoretical analysis shows that the field can be excited by the collisional as well as the noncollisional processes via ponderomotive action. The collisional contribution, estimated to be in the range of kilogauss, is dominant for lower intensity (I) and shorter wavelength (λ) lasers and scales as λ−2 for both the s- and p-polarized beams. The noncollisional process can excite the field to 0.5–0.6 MG for a p-polarized intense and longer wavelength laser beam which scales as I4/3λ14/3. Faraday rotation is estimated theoretically to highlight the significance of ponderomotive effect in generating the axial field. Finally, implications of the model are discussed along with its limitations in the context of laser–plasma experiments.

    Notizen: Summary The products from the reaction oftrans-dioxobis(ethylenediamine)rhenium(V) halides with hydrogen halides have been investigated. Dilute (2M) and concentrated hydrochloric acid react with (ReO2en2)Cl in the cold to give ReO(OH)enCl2 and IRe(OH)2enCl2]Cl respectively, while with hot 6M HCl [ReOCl5]2− is formed. Dilute solutions of HX protonate [ReO2en2]X (X = Br and I) giving [ReO(OH)en2]X2 which are converted slowly into ReO(OH)enBr2 and [ReO(OH)en2](I3)2. Hot and concentrated solutions of HX reduce Rev in (ReO2en2 )X (X = Br and I) giving enH2(ReBr6) and ReI4en. The thermal decomposition of (ReO2en2)X (X = Cl, Br and I) has been studied by thermogravimetry and a polymeric compound, Re2O7en2, has been isolated by heating (ReO2en2)X at 200°. The compounds have been characterised by molecular conductivities, magnetic susceptibility and i.r. spectra.

    Notizen: Summary Protein A of Staphylococcus aureus is an Fc receptor for IgG that has been used as a therapeutic reagent to treat cancer in humans and experimental animals. We used ultracentrifugation combined with analysis of isolated fractions by radioimmunoprecipitation and competitive radioimmunoassay with chicken antibodies that bind free protein A or protein A in complexes but do bind free immunoglobulin reagents to localize and characterize the types of complexes formed with different molar ratios of 125I-protein A and human 131I-IgG alone or in serum, and 1311-Fcγ fragments. This approach offers a distinct advantage over direct counting of radioactivity in the fractions because resolution of complexes and free reagents is much improved. With excess 131I-IgG or 1311-Fc, all the 125I-protein A is present only in complexes that contained 4 molecules of immunoglobulin reagent and 2 molecules of protein A (4:2 complexes), whereas with excess 125I-protein A the stoichiometry of the complexes was 1:1. We have also shown the preformed 4:2 and 1:1 complexes will interconvert in the presence of added excess protein A or IgG, respectively, and that fresh IgG will exchange with IgG or Fcγ in preformed complexes. Because protein A has been found to elute from an immobilized reagent used in serotherapy of human cancer and is present in a large excess of IgG, the 4:2 complexes may play an active role in the tumoricidal or toxic reactions observed.

    Notizen: Abstract Surface binding of anti-actin IgG alone or in a Mr = 716 000 [(IgG)2Protein A]2 complex results in a stimulation of DNA synthesis and cell growth in L cells. Cyclic-AMP (0.01–1.0 mM) added to such cell cultures augmented DNA synthesis as measured by incorporation of [3H]thymidine into DNA. Theophylline (0.1–1.0 mM), a phosphodiesterase inhibitor which prevents enzymatic breakdown of cAMP, had similar effects, but cGMP (0.01–1.0 µM) reversed the effects of cAMP and theophylline upon DNA synthesis. Analysis of the cell cycle by flow cytometry revealed that antibody produced a shift (7%) of cells from the G1-phase to the S-phase (DNA-synthetic) of the cell cycle at 72 hr of incubation. Addition of cAMP (0.5 mM) to cell cultures, however, produced significant shifts of antibody stimulated cells from G1-phase to S-phase at all time points measured, i.e., 24 (12%),48 (22%),72 hr (23%). Thus, antibody recruited cells into S-phase of the cell cycle and cAMP greatly augmented the effect. These observations suggest that the mechanism of activation of L cell growth by antibody to surface antigens involves a recruitment of cells into the DNA-synthetic phase and that the effect may be mediated by cAMP.

    Notizen: Abstract A static induced magnetization of Alfven waves (IMAW) due to the inverse Faraday effect is defined and studied. The Alfven waves are assumed to propagate along helical lines of force of a force-free ambient magnetic field. This induced magnetization follows from the magnetic moment of ordered gyrating motion of charges in the presence of electromagnetic waves and an ambient field. The helicity of the force-free field is found to decrease due to this IMAW. This effect is expected to be important in the physics of magnetization of the sun and pulsars, and also in laboratory devices for the generation of plasmas and their heating.
