Notes: A static heat exchanger was used to study the extent of heat induced fouling in the device due to passage of cow, buffalo, double toned and reconstituted milk for a period of one hour. The static heat exchanger was developed to simulate the flow condition of an actual indirect type heat exchanger employed in the processing plant. Flow rate of 2x10-7 m3 s-1 was selected as this gave the same 1.052x10-3 m3 m-2 flow rate/surface area ratio as applicable to indirect double tube heat exchangers used in the industry. Both milk with fat and with fat removed by centrifugal separation were used. Fresh and recycled milk were the other two factors used in the study of fouling. It was found that there was no significant difference in fouling deposit formation between fresh and recycled milk, but significant difference existed between milk with fat and milk with fat removed. Reconstituted milk was found to have significantly lower deposit compared to cow, buffalo and double toned milk.

Notes: Hydrostatic creep tests were run on cylindrical specimens of Rome Beauty apples to study the mechanical response. Volumetric strain was measured for different levels and durations of applied stress. The former was separated into recoverable, permanent, instantaneous, and time dependent components. A general constitntive relationship was developed from statistical analysis. A mechanical model was proposed to explain the strain response of the material.

Notes: A control logic algorithm is described for use with computer-based control systems on batch retort operations in the thermal processing of canned foods. The system is capable of automatically adjusting process time during the cook cycle to compensate precisely for any unexpected deviation in retort temperature. It takes into account the cooling lethality contributed with conduction-heating foods, and does not rely on any test cans for monitoring product center temperature. Performance is demonstrated by computer-generated plots showing actual retort temperature history along with calculated center temperature and accumulated process lethality; and results are compared with other methods.

Notes: Hamilton (1822) described and figured Bola chaptis from the River Ganges, but left no type material. Trewavas & Talwar (1972, p. 11) have described a species that they believe identical with B. chaptis and placed it in the genus Bahaba Herre. Since their specimens came from Burma they did not propose a neotype from among them. During the course of a taxonomic study of the family Sciaenidae, 3 well-preserved specimens in the collections of the Zoological Survey of India were recognized by us as the same species. They were collected by the junior author at Chinsura in the Hooghly estuary during September 1954. This discovery supports the decision of Trewavas and Talwar to use Hamilton's name and after consultation with Dr Trewavas we have decided to select one of these specimens as neotype of Bahaba chaptis (Hamilton).

Notes: Abstract Electrochemical carboxylation of 2-acetyl-6-methoxynaphthalene to 2-hydroxy-2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)propionic acid may be carried out in good yield (∼89% in the electrolysis; 75% as isolated dried product) in an undivided flow cell using lead as the cathode and aluminium as the dissolving anode. Dimethylformamide was found to be the best solvent for the reaction and low cost tetraethylammonium chloride hydrate is a good electrolyte for the system. The best conditions are those that increase carbon dioxide concentration although higher pressure seems to be more effective than low temperature. The reaction may be carried out with good yield at fairly high current density (1150Am−1) and higher current densities are likely attainable. The allowable payload is limited to around 10% because higher payloads (20%) resulted in solution too viscous to pump. Initially it was surmised that trace quantities of water would be detrimental to good yields in these reactions. However, it was found that small amounts of water (that associated with typical quaternary ammonium chloride salts) has the beneficial effect of eliminating the major byproduct which is formed in more nearly anhydrous solutions without resulting in formation of alternative byproducts. Process conditions were evaluated at 0.2L scale, then scaled up to 1L and finally 75L. The best results were attained in the 1L system, solvable operating problems limited the yield in the largest scale electrolysis.

Notes: Abstract In the present paper, ray analysis of the wave propagation has been used to evaluate the excitation of a linear dielectric guide by a gaussian beam. The paper begins by determining the Green's function of the structure and also evaluates the excitation by gaussian beam therefrom, following Falsen and Shin [1].
