Notes: Background  In the literature no specific dermoscopic criteria have been described for the diagnosis of Bowen's disease (BD).Objective/aim  To assess the morphological findings of BD seen under dermoscopic observation. Methods  Clinical and dermoscopic images of 14 patients affected by BD with various amount of pigmentation were obtained by means of Heine Dermaphot. Dermoscopic images were analysed by experienced observers applying the modified pattern analysis. Results  The most frequently occurring dermoscopic features were found to be: multicomponent pattern (100%); atypical vascular structures (86.6%); absence of pigmented network (64.3%) or presence of pseudo-network (35.7%); irregular diffuse pigmentation or blotches of pigment (64.2%); irregularly distributed dots and globules (64.2%); focal/multifocal hypopigmentation (78.5%), scaly surface (64.2%) and haemorrages (26.6%).Conclusions  Dermoscopically, BD is mainly characterized by a multicomponent global pattern associated with a prominent vascular pattern (mainly dotted vessels) and a scaly surface. Although no specific dermoscopic criteria can be given for BD, epiluminescence can be a valuable aid in the diagnosis of such a mimicker lesion.

Notes: Using a least-squares method of analyzing X-ray diffraction profiles, it is shown that one can calculate directly the Fourier coefficients of the Kα1 component from the total Kα doublet intensities. These Fourier coefficients can be calculated around any preferred points of the profile, e.g. the center of gravity or peak of the profile of Kα1.

Notes: Operating with a high frequency and a wave guide antenna, the ion Bernstein wave (IBW) experiment on the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade is not dominated, as expected, by nonlinear plasma edge phenomena. By coupling IBW power, a simultaneous increase of plasma density and central electron temperature (≥2 keV) is produced when the confinement magnetic field is adjusted to set an ion cyclotron resonant layer in the plasma bulk. Transport analysis indicates a reduction of the electron thermal transport inside the internal resonant layer larger than a factor of 2. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This article reports on the design of the motional Stark effect diagnostic (MSE) for the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade tokamak (Rmaj=93 cm, rmin=33 cm, BT〈8 T). The attenuation and emissivity of a diagnostic hydrogen beam have been estimated for typical discharges to assess the feasibility of the diagnostic. Due to the geometrical constraints the beam direction and the polarimeter lines of sight lie on a vertical plane on the same horizontal port. This layout has the advantage of a more convenient projection of the polarization vector on the line of sight, which increases the sensitivity of the measure. The relay optics has been designed so as to minimize Faraday rotation effects which would perturb the measurements. Two polarimeters based on different modulating techniques are compared and discussed. The first one makes use of photoelastic modulators. The second employs a fast rotating retarder plate. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The thermal viscoplastic stresses and the dislocation densities in silicon ribbon are computed for an axially changing thermal profile by using an iterative finite difference method. A material constitutive equation (Haasen–Sumino model) which involves an internal variable (mobile dislocation density) is used. The results are interpreted as showing that there is a maximum width of silicon ribbon that can be grown when viscoplasticity and dislocations are considered. This maximum width limitation does not exist if the material behavior is elastic.

Notes: Abstract A multicentre observational study was conducted in order to detect the major clinical diagnosis found in 761 patients with Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) attending 50 Italian centres for rheumatology and internal medicine. Systemic sclerosis was the most frequent condition associated with secondary RP, occurring in 216 (28.4%) patients. The other most frequent clinical diagnoses included systemic lupus erythematosus (52 cases: 6.8%) and rheumatoid arthritis (38 cases: 5%). Other RP-related diseases (hypertension, Sjögren's syndrome, mixed connective tissue disease, undifferentiated connective tissue disease, fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, cryoglobulinemia, dermatopolymyositis, vasculitis, thoracic outlet syndrome, hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus) occurred in less than 5% of cases. A total of 130 (48%) out of 268 patients with primary RP showed one or more clinical features indicating a fairly high risk of evolving into fully established systemic sclerosis. None of these patients fulfilled the ACR criteria for systemic sclerosis. This study shows that over 50% of patients with RP attending 50 Italian centres for rheumatology and internal medicine had a connective tissue disease. The large number of patients with primary RP and isolated clinical features of connective tissue disease indicates that more efforts should be focused on developing new criteria for the classification of RP.
