Notes: Abstract Zeolites, or more broadly molecular sieves, can be found in a majority of the major catalytic processes in today’s petroleum refinery. This paper provides an overview of the use of zeolite catalysts in today’s petroleum refineries, and emphasizes some of the newer refining applications including gasoline sulfur removal and dewaxing via isomerization. Zeolite catalysts are also finding new applications at the refinery–petrochemical complex interface. These applications will also be highlighted.

Notes: A reactor of fiour crossflow nomolithic blocks is used to approximate a cocurrent and a countercurrent reactor-heat excanger. Essentailly isothermal reaction pass profiles are produced by flowing the coolant and reactant streams cocurrent to each other according to the criteria set down in Part I of this paper. A multiplicy of steady states is shown to exist for the autothermal countercurrent mode, but not for the autothermal cocurrent mode, under identical conditions.

Notes: Mathematical development is presented for the theory of a reactor heat exchanger in which the heat generated in the reaction stream is simultaneously transferred to a co-currently flowing coolant stream. The advantages of this scheme include isothermal conditions for the reaction stream, decreased parametric sensitivity, and improved stability.
