Notes:
Summary 1. Using a slightly modified version of the method for demonstrating insulin with pseudoisocyanin (Schiebler and Schiessler, 1959) and autoradiography, it has been calculated in the pancreatic islets of fetal and new-born white mice that the maximum of the 3H-thymidine index for beta cells is 21.1%. 2. Differentiated beta cells appear for the first time in 14 day old embryos. 3. The first DNA synthesis of beta cells could be detected in 15 day old embryos. 4. The DNA synthesis phase of beta cells, exocrine acinus cells and epithelial cells of small ducts lasts uniformly approximately 6 hrs. The generation time of these cell types varies between 32.2 and 90.9 hrs. 5. Granulated beta cells in mitosis were found.
