Notes: Summary A method, using seismic data, is presented for the mapping of the irregular boundary of an elastic half-space. It furnishes the shape of the corrugations in terms of the measured displacement field generated by plane dilatational or shear waves reflected from the boundary.

Notes: Summary Investigated is the effect of a surface irregularity on the propagation of waves in an isotropic, elastic plate, the method of perturbation being employed to determine the scattered field to the first order in a small parameter descriptive of the height of the irregularity. While the firstorder displacement field in the region under, and in the immediate vicinity of, the disturbed surface is very complicated, the far field in either direction, generated by either a symmetric or an antisymmetric incident wave, consists of a finite number of propagating waves, symmetric and antisymmetric, their number corresponding to the number of real roots of the frequency equation for the given frequency of incident wave. The general, analytical, results are then applied to the example of a plate having a small triangular protrusion or indentation on one of its surfaces, and the displacement is displayed in graphical form. In the course of the investigation it is shown that the roots of the Rayleigh-Lamb frequency equation are symmetrically located about the axes of the reals and imaginaries.

Notes: Summary Equations are formulated to account for the effects of temperature on the dynamical behavior of two-phase materials typified by liquid-saturated rocks. The constitutive relations reveal the existence of several interesting coupling coefficients, two of which appear to have gone unnoticed heretofore and a third, though noticed, never before measured. Specifically, the first two coefficients are associated with thermal expansion and the third with local heat flow between the phases. Experimental work is reported on the measurement of these quantities for a kerosene-saturated sandstone. Solutions of the field equations are then studied appropriate to the propagation of plane waves, and it is shown that in an isotropic, “thermoporoelastic” medium there exist, in general, four distinct dilatational motions. Two of these represent modifications of the “fast” and “slow” waves in a two-phase medium at constant temperature, the other two are diffusion-like modes analogous to theT-waves in a single-phase thermoelastic solid. Finally, for values of material constants corresponding to the kerosene-filled sandstone mentioned above, results of numerical calculations are displayed for the dispersion and attenuation of these waves at seismic frequencies.

Notes: Summary It is shown within the framework of the linear theory of thermoelasticity that, for thermal radiation conditions at the boundary, pure compressional and flexural modes of motion cannot exist in a traction-free plate. Rigorously, the modes become uncoupled only for the special cases of isothermal and adiabatic boundary conditions: approximately, however, they are uncoupled even in the general case if the analysis is confined to the lowest-order terms in the small dimensionless frequency associated with such problems. Then the motions represent generalizations of the classical Rayleigh-Lamb waves. The effect of thermal conductivity is to reduce the phase velocity and introduce disipation, and is noticeable primarily for long waves.

Notes: Summary A study has been made of the compressibility and force transmission in a granular material, modeled as a two-dimensional random packing of like spheres in elastic contact. The packing geometry is represented by a stochastic planar graph, with the nodes of the graph taken as centers of the spheres and the branches, as contacts between adjacent spheres. The stochastic graph is replaced by a lattice each of whose branches has a random stiffness modulus assigned to it. The corresponding set of stiffness moduli is considered a two-dimensional random process characterized by the porosity, average coordination number and internal-angle distribution of the packing. For mechanical response calculations, the lattice is treated as an elastic structure with branch stiffness in the form of the Hertz contact law, and analyzed by the node method. For a granular assemblage loaded by uniform pressure, computations show that the model yields a larger compressibility than that predicted by Brandt's theory. Moreover, Brandt's assumption of the equality of contact forces is not borne out. On the contrary, it was found that the contact forces vary in magnitude over a large range of values and that, indeed, a sizable fraction (approximately 20%) of the sphere contacts support no load whatever. Finally, statistical measures of the random packing other than porosity and average coordination number are shown to affect results significantly.
