Notes: The polymerization of methyl methacrylate with the VOCL3-ALEt2Br catalyst system in n-hexane has been studied. The first-order dependence of rate of polymerization on catalyst and monomer concentrations, activation energy of 6.67 kcal/mole, and NMR spectra of polymer lend support to a coordinate anionic mechanism of polymerization. It has been shown that the vanadium in V+2 oxidation state is less active than V+3 oxidation state of active complex.

Notes: Vanadium-based catalyst complexes prepared in the presence of monomers have been used for the copolymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile. VOCl3-Al(i-C4H9)3 catalyst system seems to yield an alternating copolymer. The copolymers are easily soluble in DMF and have low softening points.

Notes: Styrene is polymerized with chromium acetylacetonate-triisobutylaluminum catalyst at 40°C in a benzene medium. At the stoichiometric ratio of Al/Cr of 4, the activity for polymerization was found to be maximum. Further, the kinetic studies were carried out at this ratio of Al/Cr of maximum activity. The kinetics of polymerization and the total activation energy around 10.00 kcal/mole suggest a coordinate anionic mechanism.

Notes: Methyl methacrylate was polymerized at 40°C with VOCl3-AlEt2Cl catalyst system in n-hexane. The rate of polymerization was proportional to catalyst and monomer concentration at Al/V ratio of 2 and overall activation energy of 9.25 kcal/mole support a coordinate anionic mechanism of polymerization. The catalytic activity and stereospecificity of this catalyst system is discussed in comparison with that of VOCl3-AlEt3 catalyst system.

Notes: Polymerization of methyl methacrylate has been studied with the chromium acetylacetonate-triisobutyl aluminum catalyst system in benzene medium at 40°C. These studies have been carried out at an Al/Cr ratio of 12 to compare the behavior with the previously studied chromium acetyl acetonate-triethyl aluminum catalyst system. The enhanced yield and gelling of polymer suggests a free-radical mechanism of polymerization. Further, the kinetics of polymerization and the heterotactic structure of polymer as determined by NMR examination have led to confirmation of the freeradical mechanism of polymerization of methyl methacrylate by an excess of triisobutylaluminum in the presence of catalyst complex.

Notes: Isoprene was polymerized at 30°C with VCl4-AlEt2Br catalyst system in n-hexane. A linear dependence of rate of polymerization on the monomer and catalyst concentrations was found. The overall activation energy was 8.96 kcal/mole. Infrared spectra of polyisoprene showed the presence of cyclic structure, indicating a cationic mechanism of polymerization.

Notes: The polymerization of methyl methacrylate with Ziegler-Natta catalyst, anionic catalyst and gamma radiation has been shown possible at temperatures below 0°C. A free radical mechanism is suggested in the case of Ziegler-Natta catalyst which is known for a coordinate anionic polymerization mechanism. In view of this, the Ziegler-Natta catalysts based on vanadium compounds were investigated for the polymerization of methyl methacrylate. They were found effective for polymerization of methyl methacrylate at, and around, room temperature. The structure of the polymer was stereoblock. This apparently leads to the conclusion that the mechanism of polymerization of methyl methacrylate was not free radical but coordinate anionic. Similarly, the catalyst system of chromium acetyl acetonate and aluminium triethyl polymerized methyl methacrylate at and around room temperature into an highly stereoblock structure containing high isotacticity.

Notes: Kinetics of the polymerization of styrene in the presence of benzene at 30°C., with chromium acetylacetonate in combination with triethylaluminum and also in combination with diethylaluminum bromide as catalyst, have been studied. Chromium acetylacetonate forms a homogeneous system with triethylaluminum, and chromium acetylacetonate with diethylaluminum bromide behaves as a heterogeneous system. This homogeneous catalyst system, though reported inactive in the polymerization of α-olefins, has been found effective with styrene. Depending on the homogeneity and heterogeneity of the system, the rate of polymerization is proportional to half order and first order of catalyst concentration. A probable reason for the effect of homogeneity on the order of reaction has been discussed. A study of the effect of diethylzinc as a chain-transfer agent has helped to confirm the mechanism of polymerization.
