    Notes: Summary The demonstration of glycogen by PAS-method and the reaction of phosphorylase by Takeuchi et al. were performed in the hearts of rats 30 min after experimental coronary occlusion. While the cardiac muscle cells in the center of the ischemic region still contained glycogen, the cells in the border zone of the infarction did not. The phosphorylase activity was demonstrable only in those cardiac muscle cells which contained glycogen. As well known that the demonstration of phosphorylase activity is possible only if glycogen as starter is present, it is concluded that the lack of phosphorylase activity by the histochemical reaction in cells which do not contain glycogen doesn't prove the absence of the enzyme.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In der 1. Phase der Carcinogenese (bis zum 62. Tag) wiesen die Leberzellen zentroacinär eine grob- und später eine mehr feinblasige Umwandlung auf, die sich im weiteren Verlauf weiter ausbreitete und die Zentralvenen straßenförmig miteinander verband. Diese Zellen wiesen histochemisch gleichartige Enzymprofile auf, die sich lediglich in ihrem Niveau unterschieden. In der 2. Phase (63. bis zum 86. Tag) traten zentroacinär Inseln glykogenspeichernder Zellen auf, aus denen sich in der 3. Phase (87. bis zum 127. Tag) kleine basophile Zellen, die primären Krebszellen, entwickelten. Die glykogenspeichernden und die basophilen Zellen wiesen in ihren Enzymprofilen erhebliche Unterschiede zu den grob- und feinblasig umgewandelten Zellen auf, während sie sich untereinander sehr ähnlich waren. Schließlich entwickelten sich trabeculäre, solide, tubuläre und anaplastische Carcinome, deren Enzymprofile deutliche Unterschiede aufwiesen (4. Phase, 128–190. Tag). Bei der Carcinogenese müssen unspezifisch toxische und cancerogene toxische Leberzellveränderungen unterschieden werden, was sich weniger im histologischen Bild als vielmehr im histochemischen Verhalten der Zellen manifestiert.
    Notes: Summary During the first stage (1st–62nd day) there was at first a coarse, later a fine vacuolisation of the hepatocytes in the acinar centre. This change expanded and finally the central veins were connected by streets of vacuolisated cells. Histochemically the coarsely and finely vacuolated hepatocytes showed identical enzymatic profiles, differing only in their levels. During the second stage (63rd–86th day) islets of glycogen storing cells appeared in the acinar centre; these changed to basophilic cells and later became primary carcinoma cells during the third stage (87th–127th day). The enzymatic profiles of the glycogen storing and basophilic cells were similar but differed greatly from those of the vacuolated cells. Finally trabecular, solid, tubular and anaplastic carcinomas with different enzymatic profiles arose from these cells (fourth stage, 128th–190th day). It is evident that there is an unspecific and a carcinogenetic toxic alteration of the hepatocytes in experimental carcinogenesis. These changes differ less in the histological picture than in histochemical reactions.
