    Notes: A finite element model is developed based on the penalty formulation to study incompressible laminar flows. The study includes a number of new quadrilateral and triangular elements for 2-dimensional flows and a number of new hexahedral and tetrahedral elements for 3-dimensional flows. All elements employ continuous velocity approximations and discontinuous pressure approximations respecting the LBB condition of numerical instability. An incremental Newton-Raphson method coupled with the Broyden method is used to solve the non-linear equations. Several numerical examples (colliding flow, cavity flow, etc.) are presented to assess the efficiency of elements.

    Notes: New finite elements have been developed to simulate steady and unsteady two-dimensional free surface flows. The depth-averaged velocity components with the free surface elevation have been used as independent variables in the model. The differences between the various elements presented lie in the choice of velocity approximation. The Newton-Raphson method has been used to solve the non-linear system of equations. Emphasis is put on bench-mark examples to assess the accuracy and efficiency of the elements. A simple stable new element tested herein shows promising advantages for industrial finite element codes.

    Notes: We present an algorithm for introducing a global constraint of volume conservation in lake circulation problems. The algorithm is described for linear problems, and is then generalized to non-linear cases. Numerical examples are presented to show the influence of water-level conditions on convergence and to demonstrate the practical superiority of the global constraint algorithm for obtaining reliable convergent solutions.

The first scheme is the classical Newton-Raphson linearization, the second one is the modified Newton-Raphson linearization and the last one is a new scheme called the asymptotic-Newton method.     Notes: An automatic algorithm is presented for reducing the bandwidth of symmetric sparse connectivity matrices. The procedure takes an arbitrary input sequence and creates an optimal bandwidth for complex network systems by renumbering the node labels. Thus, considerable improvement for computer storage and time is achieved in the solution of the systems.A large number of examples is presented to demonstrate the reliability and the efficiency of the method.

    Notes: A new method of solving the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations by using the finite element method is proposed. The flow is represented by the stream function-vorticity formulation and the no-slip boundary conditions are explicitly introduced in the nonlinear equations. This formulation coupled with the Newton-Raphson method enables the study of stationary flows for high Reynolds number, without any convergence problem. A number of flow problems are analysed in order to demonstrate the efficiency of the present formulation.

    Notes: A valuable variational approach for plate problems based on the Reissner-Mindlin theory is presented. The new MiSP (Mixed Shear Projected) approach is based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle, with a particular representation of transversal shear forces and transversal shear strains. The approximations of the shear forces are derived from those of the bending moments using the corresponding equilibrium relations. The shear strains are defined in terms of the edge tangential strains that are projected on the element degrees of freedom. Two finite elements are developed on the MiSP approach basis: 3-node triangular element MiSP3 and 4-node quadrilateral element MiSP4. Both elements can be considered as the most simple among the existent mixed elements. A modified MiSP model with a derived 4-node element is also presented. Numerical experiments are presented which show that the MiSP elements do not exhibit shear locking and give excellent results for thick and thin plates. They also pass the patch test for a general triangle and quadrilateral. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
