    Notes: It has been suggested that patients with allergic rhinitis who present nonspecific bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) are those most likely to develop asthma. Therefore, a study was conducted in children with rhinoconjunctivitis to ascertain whether BHR to methacholine might predict the development of asthma in these patients. Fifteen patients with hay fever and no previous symptoms of asthma were selected. All underwent clinical symptom tests and methacholine tests, during the pollen season in the 4 consecutive years following the start of the study. At the end of this period, 5 patients had developed asthma. It may thus be affirmed that, in this group, neither the presence nor the degree of previous BHR was useful for predicting which patients would later develop asthma.

    Notes: Reproducible, exercise-induced anaphylactic reactions occur in some patients only after certain foods have been eaten before exercise. We describe a patient in whom hazelnuts were a triggering factor for exercise-induced anaphylaxis. Skin tests and RAST were positive for nuts and grass and weed pollen. The exercise challenge test after hazelnut ingestion was positive. Food hypersensitivity should be investigated in all cases of exercise-induced anaphylaxis.

    Notes: Abstract A method which allows us to analyze the electromagnetic scattering characteristics of multiple discontinuities in shielded dielectric waveguides is presented. There are not restrictions both geometry of the cross section and electrical parameters of the dielectrics which are assumed to be linear, inhomogeneous, isotropic and free from losses. Each discontinuity is analyzed combining a modal matching technique with a generalized telegraphist's equations formulation; in this way, we obtain its scattering matrix. By using the concept of the generalized scattering matrix of two discontinuities, the equivalent generalized scattering matrix (EGSM) of the cascaded set is calculated. Theoretical and experimental results were obtained for different dielectric structures such as dielectric posts, isolated and coupled, as well as dielectric waveguides with circular cross section connected by means of abrupt and gradual transitions. The experimental values for the scattering properties show a good agrement with the theoretical ones. This study has shown the possibility of using cylindrical dielectric structures to design microwave devices such as: resonators, power-dividers and filters.

    Notes: Abstract Rye-grass, Lolium multiflorum, cultures on perlite, an artificial soil, were carried out with a basic nutrient solution (modified in each experiment), adding double distilled water when necessary to restore evaporation losses. Cultures were collected at different times, separated into roots and tops and controlled by moisture, dry weights and metallic element contents measurements. Plant chemical analyses were performed after HF-HN03-HClO4 digestion by AAS (Mg, Ca, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Co, Ni, Cd, As, Pb) and flame emission (Na and K). Cultures with changes in basic nutrient solution component concentrations, with additions of potentially toxic elements (Co, Ni, Cd, As, Pb, Cu, Zn, Na) and with different periods of culture (7 to 49 days after 6 days for germination) were carried out. Measurements of metallic elements dissolution and diffusion within a perlite layer were also made. For discussion of results ionic impulsions are introduced as I = c 1/n , where c is the considered metallic element concentration and n its oxidation number. Root or top uptakes of a metallic element follow linear relationships with their ionic impulsions in nutrient solution or root, respectively. Roots and tops seem to keep constant the total ionic impulsions, sums of individual metallic elements ionic impulsions. Toxic effects were evident for total ionic impulsions greater than average values. Results are further discussed through NUTRIENT SOLUTION ⇔ PERLITE ⇔ ROOT ⇔ TOP equilibria that suggest a single assimilation mechanism for roots, and two different ones for ROOT ⇒ TOP step: (i) an osmotic permeation with root accumulation of some elements (Cu, Zn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cd, As, Pb) and (ii) a DONNAN permeation leading to top accumulation of other metals (Mg, K, Ca, Na, Mn).

    Notes: Summary The possibility of separating and recovering heavy metals from hydrometallurgical effluents by successive solvent extractions has been investigated by two different procedures with liquid waste from the Espindesa Zinc process. The waste (pH value near to 1.5) includes significant amounts of Zn (≈1.35), Cu (≈0.12), Co (≈0.32) and Mn (≈0.6 g/l) in the presence of big concentrations of macro-constituents (sulphate, chloride, Na) and Fe [≈8.8 g/l, mostly as Fe(II) salts]. As extractants, Amberlite La-2 (a secondary ammine, as chlorohydrate) and DEHPA (di-2-ethylhexyl-phosphoric acid) at 25% volume in kerosene were selected. The first method includes two extraction stages with LA-2 for Zn and Cu separation (the last one with 60 g/l of chloride ions) and three stages with DEHPA at pH values near to 1.5, 2.0 and 3.5 for isolating Fe, Mn and Co. The second method separates firstly Fe (as ferric salts) with DEHPA. Afterwards, one stage with LA-2 isolates Zn and three stages with DEHPA at pH values near to 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 lead to fractions rich in Mn, Cu and Co. Reextractions from organic layers with water or HCl at different concentrations lead to purer solutions of the isolated metals. With both methods, the liquid waste can be converted into a saline solution with lesser problems for disposal.
