    Notes: A study of the effect of shock waves on the phase state of a hard ferrimagnetic material has been performed. A plane shock wave was passed along the axis of a cylindrical BaFe12O19 hard ferrite magnet. The shock wave demagnetized the cylinder, reducing the magnetic flux. This change in magnetic flux generated an electromotive force (EMF) in a coil wound around the ferrite. The value of the EMF calculated on the assumption that the ferrite was completely demagnetized by the shock wave is in good agreement with the peak EMF value obtained experimentally. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary Potentials from antennal muscle movement induced by stimulation with the pheromone frontalin were recorded simultaneously with the electroantennogram (EAG) fromDendroctonus frontalis. The beetle-produced pheromones verbenone and trans-verbenol were found to decrease the muscle potential activity elicited by frontalin.

    Notes: Summary Green leaf volatiles were shown to interrupt responses to aggregation pheromones of three species of bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) which infest pines in the southern United States [the southern pine beetle,Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm.; the four-spined engraver,Ips avulsus (Eichhoff); and the five-spined engraver,Ips grandicollis (Eichhoff)]. The order of effectiveness of the compounds tested for each species was hexanal〉hexanal+hexan-1-ol〉hexan-1-ol. Neither hexanal, hexan-1-ol nor hexanal+hexan-1-ol was as effective in interrupting pheromone responses ofD. frontalis as verbenone, a known inhibitor of this species. Other than interspecific chemical signals, this is the first report of an interruptant forIps species, and the only report of a pheromone interruptant active for bothIps andDendroctonus species.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé On a enregistré des électroantennogrammes deIps typographus mâles et femelles en réaction aux énantiomères de leur phéromone,cis-verbénol, et du précurseur, α-pinène. (S)-(-)-α-pinène, précurseur de (S)-(-)-cis-verbénol, a provoqué des réactions sensiblement plus importantes que le (R)-(+)-énantiomère aussi bien chez les mâles que chez les femelles. Les mâles ont réagi davantage à (S)-(-)-α-pinène que les femelles. La réaction des femelles à (S)-(-)-cis-verbénol était sensiblement plus forte qu'au (R)-(+)-énantiomère. Ces résultats ont montré un nombre semblable d'accepteurs pour la phéromone et pour le terpène de la plante-hôte, la phéromone ayant une plus grande affinité pour ses accepteurs. Sur la base des données électro-physiologiques, on a construit des accepteurs hypothétiques.
    Notes: Abstract Electroantennograms (EAGs) were recorded from adult male and female beetles to enantiomers of their pheromone,cis-verbenol, and the precursor,α-pinene. (S)-(-)-α-pinene, the precursor for (S)-(-)-cis-verbenol, elicited significantly greater responses in both males and females than did the (R)-(+)-enantiomer. Male beetles were more responsive to the (S)-(-)-α-pinene than female beetles. The response of female beetles was significantly greater to (S)-(-)-cis-verbenol than to the (R)-(+)-enantiomer. Although EAGs indicated a similar number of acceptor sites for both the pheromone and host terpene, the pheromone had a greater affinity for its acceptor sites. Based on electro-physiological data hypothetical acceptors were constructed.

    Notes: Abstract Insect predators can be guided to their prey by a kairomonal response to the prey pheromone. We found this phenomenon to be highly specific in the bark beetle predatorThanasimus dubius. Olfactory responses and behavioral tests revealed that the predator is guided to its major preyDendroctonusfrontalis by the primary enantiomer of the pheromone of the prey, (1S, 5R)-(−)-frontalin. These and other findings suggest the co-evolution of a kairomone system of the predator and the pheromone system of its prey.

    Notes: Abstract Electroantennograms (EAGs) from male and femaleIps avulsus, I. calligraphus, andI. grandicollis to their pheromones and selected host odorants or kairomones verified the presence of antennal olfactory receptors in both sexes of each species capable of detecting ipsdienol, ipsenol,cis- andtrans-verbenol,endo-brevicomin α-pinene, frontalin, and verbenone. Each species possesses receptors with lower thresholds and in greater abundance for the compounds they produce and to which they are behaviorally most responsive. Detection of bothIps andDendroctonus pheromones by the three cohabiting species provides a sensory basis for olfactory interactions among the species. Differences in both threshold and saturation levels for EAGs for the various behavioral chemicals could denote differences in specific behavioral roles for each compound.

    Notes: Abstract Electroantennograms were obtained fromD. pseudotsugae in response to the pheromones 3-methylcyclohex-2-en-1-one (3,2-MCHone), 3-methylcyclohex-2-en-1-ol (3,2-MCHol), frontalin,trans-verbenol, verbenone, and the host terpene hydrocarbons limonene and camphene. Male and female beetles were 10 and 100 times more sensitive to 3,2-MCH-one and 3,2-MCHol than to the other compounds. Of the other compounds, males were most sensitive totrans-verbenol, verbenone, and camphene, while females were most sensitive to frontalin, limonene, and camphene. The results parallel and help explain behavior of individual males and females during host tree selection, aggregation, and colonization.

    Notes: Abstract In laboratory and field bioassays, the response ofDendroctonus frontalis was significantly greater to the mixture of (1S, 5R)-(−)-frontalin andalpha-pinene than to (1R,5S)-(+)-frontalin andalpfa-pinene. Electro-physiological studies revealed that antennal olfactory receptor cells were significantly more responsive to (1S, 5R)-(−)-frontalin than to (1R, 5S)-(+)-frontalin. Both enantiomers stimulated the same olfactory cells which suggests that each cell possesses at least two types of enantiomer-specific acceptors.
