Abstract The experimental evaluation of crack length in the elastic unloading compliance technique for fracture-toughness testing of compact tension (CT) specimens is discussed with reference to the accuracy required for the digital acquisition of the load and displacement data. In addition, the influence of nonlinearity in the clip-gage output with displacement is considered. The use of a second-order polynomial calibration function is described and discussed.
