Notes: Abstract Using viscometry techniques on polymer fractions, we determine the critical concentrationc * (separating the dilute and semi dilute solutions). The same measurements have been conducted with mixtures of these fractions (mixtures 1:1 by weight of fractions differing in molecular mass and chemical nature, or fractions differing only in molecular mass). The determined values of critical concentrationc * of the mixtures are higher than the values calculated based on the critical concentrations of the corresponding fractions. This deviation from the additivity rule is attributed to the resistance in the interpenetration (delay to the attainment of the homogeneous state) between macromolecular coils of different chemical nature or of the same chemical nature but of different molecular mass. Higher values of the reduced viscosities of the mixture of the fractions, compared to the values calculated using the reduced viscosities of the corresponding fractions, are observed above the critical concentrationc *. In this concentration region the interaction parameter between two different polymers is calculated.

Notes: Abstract  When viscometry is used, a crossover phenomenon is observed separating the dilute solutions into extremely dilute solutions and dilute solutions. The critical concentration c **, determined from this crossover phenomenon, strongly depends on the shear rate in the solution. At very high values of shear rate the critical concentration c ** becomes very low and depends only on the contour length of the elongated chains of different polymers. An increase of the temperature induces an increase of c ** because the relaxation time of the chains decreases. If a polymer adopts a rodlike conformation (in a given solvent at a given temperature) the excluded volume of its chains increases and its critical concentration c ** decreases.

Notes: Summary The incompatibility of different couples of polymers is correlated with the dipole moment of these polymers. It is shown that when the dipole moment of a polymer A is very close to the dipole moment of a polymer B the incompatibility of the mixture polymer A-polymer B is very low. In the contrary a mixture polymer A-polymer B presents a high incompatibility when the dipole moment of the polymer A is too different from the dipole moment of the polymer B.

Notes: Abstract The Stockmayer-Fixman-Burchard (SFB) and the Dondos-Benoit (DB) equations have been applied to determine the unperturbed dimensions parameterK χ of wormlike polymers. An empirical relation between the Flory's constant Φ and the Mark-Houwink-Sakurada (MHS) exponenta has been proposed. The Φ values found by this equation are lower than the value 2.5×1023 used in the case of flexible polymers and this deviation is attributed to the influence of the draining effect. From theK χ value and the so calculated value of Φ, we calculate the Kuhn statistical segment length of wormlike polymers. The obtained — for a great number of wormlike polymers — statistical segment lengths are almost the same as these calculated by the Yamakawa-Fujii and the Bohdanecky methods. The molecular mass regions in which the SFB, the DB, and the MHS equations are valid are explored. A criterion for the distinction between flexible and wormlike polymers is proposed based on the way of approach to the power law.

Notes: Summary In this article a method is proposed, for the determination of the molecular weight of polymers, based on the displacement of the critical solution temperature of two non-miscible liquids in presence of a polymer. This displacement obeys to a scaling law, i.e. a linear relation exists between the logarithm of the displacement and the logarithm of the molecular weight of the polymer or of the hydrodynamic volume of the polymer, [η]M.
