    Notes: This report presents an assessment of the efficiency and power density limitations of thermophotovoltaic (TPV) energy conversion systems for both ideal (radiative limited) and practical (defect-limited) systems. Thermodynamics is integrated into the unique physics of TPV conversion, and used to define the intrinsic tradeoff between power density and efficiency. The results of the analysis reveal that the selection of diode band gap sets a limit on achievable efficiency well below the traditional Carnot level. In addition it is shown that filter performance dominates diode performance in any practical TPV system and determines the optimum band gap for a given radiator temperature. It is demonstrated that for a given radiator temperature, lower band-gap diodes enable both higher efficiency and power density when spectral control limitations are included. The goal of this work is to provide a better understanding of the basic system limitations that will enable successful long-term development of TPV energy conversion technology. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and spectroscopy provide important information in patients with acute head injury. However, optimal patient management requires intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring. There are few reports on the use of ICP sensors in an MR environment. We tested the Ventrix parenchymal intracranial pressure monitoring probe and monitor (Integra Neurosciences®, USA), modified by the use of a fibre-optic extension cable, within a 3 Tesla MR system. The device performed well in the MR environment, but one element within the fibre-optic extension was significantly ferromagnetic. The ICP probe produced a small susceptibility artefact on spin echo images, and a larger artefact on gradient echo images. The MR safety of the integrated system is probably acceptable, but could be easily improved with minor modifications. Although the system is MR compatible and produces generally acceptable imaging even at 3 Tesla, there is significant degradation of image quality during gradient echo sequences.

    Notes: Summary Demand for magnetic resonance investigations in critically ill patients is increasing. While these patients frequently need ventilatory support, not all of them require controlled ventilation and many may be treated with continuous positive airway pressure. Controlled ventilation, with the concurrent need for sedation, may be inappropriate when airway physiology is being studied and may retard weaning. No commercially available ventilator designed for the magnetic resonance environment can deliver high flow continuous positive airway pressure. We tested the Caradyne Whisperflow™ flow generator and five Whisperflow™ valves (2.5–15 cmH2O airway pressure) within a 3 Tesla environment for safety and possible dysfunction. All components had minimal ferromagnetic properties and tests showed no clinically relevant change in flow delivery or oxygen concentration in the magnetic field. In addition, the airway pressure generated by the valves was not affected by the magnetic field. We conclude that the tested system can be safely used in a 3 Tesla magnetic resonance environment.

    Notes: Summary The salt tolerance of guayule (Parthenium argentatum Gray cv. N565-II) was tested in small held plots (silty clay soil) in the Imperial Valley of California. Seedlings were transplanted in October 1981. Differential salination was begun in March 1982 and continued for 4 years by irrigating with waters salinized with NaCl and CaCl2 (1:1 by wt.) to obtain electrical conductivities of 0.8, 1.4, 3, 6, 9, and 12 dS/m. Dry matter, rubber, and resin yields were determined from pollarded plants in February 1984 and uprooted plants in February 1985 and 1986. Rubber concentrations in the woody branches in 1984 and 1985 averaged 6.1 and 7.3%, respectively on a dry weight basis and were not significantly affected by soil salinity. Resin concentrations averaged 8.6% and 7.3% for the two years. In 1986, both rubber and resin concentrations decreased with increased salinity. Rubber and resin concentrations in the root crowns were approximately one percentage point less than those of the shoot. Dry matter and resin yields were not affected by salinity until the time- and depth-averaged electrical conductivity of the saturated-soil extracts ( $$\overline{\overline {{\text{EC}}}} _e $$ ) taken from the rootzone (0–90 cm) exceeded 8.7 dS/m. Above 8.7 dS/m, both yields decreased 11.6% per dS/m increase in $$\overline{\overline {{\text{EC}}}} _e $$ . Rubber yields decreased 10.8% per dS/m above a threshold of 7.8 dS/m. Plant mortality rather than growth reduction at high levels of salinity appears to be the limiting factor for rubber production from irrigated guayule.

    Notes: Abstract Serotyping (heat stable antigens) was performed on 398 strains of Campylobacter jejuni from faeces of human enteritis cases in England. Strains isolated over 12 months at three locations were heterogeneous with 33 HS serotypes represented. HS1 and HS4 complex were the predominant types (34% of all strains). The monthly strain frequency distributions were similar at the three locations. The late spring peak appeared to be associated with a rise in miscellaneous serotypes rather than with the emergence of any characteristic predominant serotype. PFGE DNA restriction profiling provided evidence of a high degree of genomic diversity within the common HS1 and HS4 complex serotypes, irrespective of the geographical source, yet some subtypes were common to more than one location. The study showed that C. jejuni strain subtypes from human enteric infections in England were highly diverse, and that HS serotyping must be combined with a more discriminatory subtyping method such as PFGE DNA profiling to provide an accurate basis for epidemiological surveillance.

    Notes: Abstract The heat transfer and fluid flow are determined for fully developed laminar flow in a vertical channel. The effects of natural and forced convection and thermal radiation are included in the analysis. The spectral variation of the radiation properties are included through the use of the total band absorptance. The analysis is general and specific numerical results have been obtained for the 15 micron band of carbon dioxide. A simplified approach for large path is also presented which is in excellent agreement with the more exact results.
