    Notes: Abstract. Type curves, and drawdown analysis curves of other sorts, have a well-established position in the ground-water profession. Although a plethora of solutions to well hydraulics problems exists, many of these arc not available in useful type curve formats. lpurthcr, if one wants to perform parameter estimation using many of these solutions, a computer-based form of the solution is needed. Those who have programmed analytical solutions know the difficulties that will be encountered in coding even the most innocuous-looking result. In this paper, a computer-based method of type curve generation is prcscnted based on Stehfest's method of inverting the Laplace transform solution of ground-water flow problems. The latter are usually easier to obtain than a complete closed-form solution. The method is very robust for a large class of well hydraulics problems. A companion diskette with FORTRAN source and executable example program is available from the author.

    Notes: Numerical models of solute transport in water-saturated porous media are routinely used to make regulatory and design decisions. For many contaminants, decisions are based on concentrations of 5 parts per billion (ppb) or less. This “action level“ is usually a small fraction (〈0.01) of the concentrations near a source of contamination. Two one-dimensional example problems are used to demonstrate that modeling errors using classical numerical methods are largest where concentrations are lowest. This implies that in regions of low dimensionless concentration, that is near the action level, large relative errors can be expected. Hence, decisions based on numerical model solutions at low concentrations must be taken cautiously. Modern numerical methods for the solution of transport equations provide better behavior, in this sense, than classical methods.

    Notes: Abstract An alternative strategy for identifying sources of contamination in groundwater systems is presented. Under the assumption that the remediation cost is affected by the level of contamination, the proposed scheme provides probabilistic estimates of source locations and spill-time histories. Moreover, the method successfully assesses the relative importance of each potential source.

    Notes: Random walk particle methods (RWPM) can be used in operator splitting schemes to simulate reactive solute transport in porous media. Projection functions are used to transfer particle location and mass information to concentrations at selected spatial points. Because of the stochastic nature of RWPM, concentration estimates made from particle distributions include a “noisy” error component. In some cases of reactive or density-dependent flows, this type of error may be propagated forward in time. It can be reduced by using larger numbers of particles or by using different projection functions. The effects of using different projection functions or numbers of particles in different flow regimes or dimensions are explored using concentration solutions for a set of one-, two-, and three-dimensional nonreactive test problems. Resulting solutions are compared with analytic results and classical random walk error estimates. A piecewise linear projection function provides a reasonable improvement in accuracy over the more convenient box methods at a modest increase in cost. The support of the projection functions should be O(Δx) to avoid excessive smearing. Multidimensional projection functions may be advantageously formed by products of different one-dimensional projection functions.
