Notes: Summary. Colposcopic, histological and cytological characteristics of 168 consecutive patients attending a colposcopy clinic were reviewed. A group of patients demonstrated a cluster of histological features previously related to possible human papilloma virus infection of cervical epithelium, including particularly koilocytosis, double nucleation and dyskeratosis. These patients had a significantly greater occurrence of colposcopic ‘finger-like’ lesion outline and colposcopic impression of warty change, but not of other specific colposcopic features. Over two-thirds of patients with histological warty features did not show these colposcopic changes. Cytological changes previously related to warty lesions did not occur commonly, and appeared to underestimate the histological occurrence of such changes. Histological changes considered to represent CIN were uncommon in patients who said that they had begun sexual activity less than 10 years ago, whereas patients with warty characteristics on histology showed no such bias.

Notes: Summary. This report analyses 1234 patients with CIN and noncondylomatous wart virus infection (NCWVI) managed by CO2 laser ablation in the Regional Department of Gynaecological Oncology, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead from 1979 to 1983. Thirty-five patients (3%) were lost to follow-up. Of the 1157 patients currently under review and with at least 1 year of follow-up, 44 (3·8%) were laser treatment failures. This group is analysed and the results compared with other series.

Notes: Summary. A selected group of 51 patients with histological features of cervical warty atypia was observed for 1 year. Initial features were compared with a cohort of 50 patients with CIN. Twenty-four patients showed resolution of the warty atypia. in 19 it remained unchanged, and in eight patients CIN or microinvasive disease was present on repeat biopsy. The DNA patterns obtained by tissue imprint of the initial biopsies and subsequent integrated densitometry, using a Vickers M85 scanning densitometer. showed that warty atypias could be objectively distinguished from CIN, but that the method could not predict the group of warty atypias that would resolve. There was no clinical feature or group of features which allowed a means of predicting the outcome of such lesions.

Notes: Summary. A total of 423 patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) have been treated with a carbon dioxide laser in the out-patient colposcopy clinic. Thirty patients required two or more treatments. Outcome has been assessed in 408 patients followed for more than 1 year. Sixteen patients (4%) have had a recurrence of CIN. Failures were not related to age, parity or size of lesion.

Notes: Summary Quantitative genetic parameters for leaf physiological and whole-plant aspects of nitrogen-use efficiency in Brassica camprestris L. were estimated in three nutrient treatments in the greenhouse. Narrow-sense heritabilities and genetic correlations varied across treatments for some traits. Sire effects were significant for leaf nitrogen content in near-optimal and super-optimal, but not in suboptimal nutrient treatments. Additive genetic variation for two estimates of leaf physiological nitrogen-use efficiency (nitrogen-based photosynthetic capacity and leaf carbon: nitrogen ratio) was significant only in the suboptimal nutrient treatment. Area-based photosynthetic capacity, on the other hand, exhibited no heritable variation in any nutrient treatment. Heritability estimates of aboveground biomass and flower production were greatest in sub- and super-optimal treatments, respectively. Negative genetic correlations between leaf nitrogen content and both estimates of leaf nitrogen-use efficiency were evident in the super-optimal treatment. Aboveground biomass and leaf nitrogen-use efficiency were positively correlated in the suboptimal treatment, suggesting that growth differences were due in part to the efficiency with which nitrogen was utilized in physiological processes. Although implications for breeding may differ for different sources of germ plasm or different measures of performance or yield, selection for improved whole-plant performance through increased nitrogen-use efficiency should proceed best in suboptimal nutrient treatments.
