    Notes: Abstract. We have investigated the population dynamics of image-potential states on the clean Pt(111) surface. The first two image-potential states have been resolved exhibiting lifetimes of 26±7 fs and 62±7 fs. Those lifetimes are in contrast to the (111) surfaces of Ag and Cu, where the n=2 state is degenerate with bulk states leading to lifetimes shorter than 20 fs.

    Notes: Summary An en bloc preparation of the mammalian superior colliculus in vitro has been used to study neurons of the superficial gray layer (SGS) with intracellular recording and HRP-technics. Electrophysiological data from kittens at 4–19 days of age suggest that at this stage SGS-neurons possess multiple spike trigger zones which can be activated by synaptic depolarization and are probably located on dendrites. In response to intratectal stimulation SGS-neurons generate EPSP-IPSP sequences or IPSPs. IPSPs are found in all penetrated cells as early as the 4th postnatal day. Ascending projection cells (APCs) and inter-layer cells (ILCs) have been identified based on antidromic activation and/or intracellular labeling with HRP. The extended dendritic arbor of APCs and ILNs (dorsal spread up to 10–20 μm below surface, horizontal spread up to 1100–1500 μm) enables these cells to sample visual information from a wide area of the visual field. Recurrent collaterals, in conjunction with potent inhibitory mechanisms, could contribute to the formation of receptive field properties of superficial tectal neurons. ILCs establish collateral connections with the intermediate gray layer.

    Notes: We have studied the electronic decay of an oxygen 1s core hole in N2O and the subsequent fragmentation into ions. Coincidence studies between the energy resolved Auger electrons and the ions reveal the individual decay channels for the various doubly charged ionic configurations populated in the Auger decay of the core hole. The site specificity in these events is not absolutely confined to breaking only the O–NN bond, even though the excitation of a core hole at the oxygen site in the initial absorption event is localized. This localization is to some extent preserved in the Auger decay, which favors the participation of valence electrons having wave functions with a large overlap at the site of the initial oxygen core hole. However some of these electrons are also crucial in forming the ON–N bond or the bonding structure of the molecule as a whole, such that removal of these electrons in the Auger decay results in the total destruction of the molecular bond.

    Notes: We present here a semiempirical assignment for the electronic decay spectra of core to bound state resonances in N2O. The electronic final states observed in these spectra can be assigned to participator and spectator decay processes, according to whether the initially excited core electron participates or acts as a spectator in the Auger decay of the core hole. The participator states are interpreted empirically using the known one electron binding energies. The assignment of the spectator lines is derived from the calculated Auger spectrum which is corrected for the Coulomb interaction between the spectator electron and the double hole valence configuration.

    Notes: High resolution electron yield spectra of core electron excitations in condensed Ru3(CO)12 exhibit a pronounced shoulder in the C 1s→π* excitation, due to transitions into unoccupied π levels consisting of linear combinations of the 2π orbitals of the various CO molecular ligands. The O edge near edge spectrum shows a clear and pronounced σ shape resonance transition, about 2 eV lower in energy than in free CO. We develop an intuitive model, which correlates the differences in the relaxation energies associated with the various core electron excitations with changes in the metal to ligand charge transfer process. The consequences of these differences in the core hole screening process with respect to standard models relating the position of the σ shape resonance to the bond length are discussed also.

    Notes: We have measured N 1s near edge absorption spectra and the kinetic energy distribution of electrons emitted in the decay of N 1s core-to-bound-state excitations in condensed pyridine, pyrazine, and s-triazine. The electron emission spectra generated in the electronic decay of the core to bound state resonances lead to singly charged, participator-type molecular final states, equivalent to the final states populated in photoemission, as well as to double hole (Auger) spectator-type final states screened by the presence of a π spectator electron. The deexcitation spectra, therefore, give insight into charge–transfer and screening processes in the initial core-electron excited state, as well as in the final spectator double-hole states. One of the most prominent participator features observed in the spectra of pyridine, pyrazine, and s-triazine is due to the emission of the most strongly bound π electrons, reflecting the dynamic screening of the core hole in the aromatic azabenzene molecules. The spectator states, on the other hand, exhibit a much reduced screening energy shift compared to linear molecules due to the delocalized nature of the π spectator electron.

    Notes: We have measured the vibrational fine structure in the electronic decay spectrum of the N 1s→1πg core electron excited state in molecular nitrogen. The Franck–Condon analysis of the vibrational substructure shows that within the 10−14 s lifetime of the core hole excited state the molecule adjusts to the excited state configuration, characterized by a change in bond length by 0.071 A(ring). Interference effects due to the short lifetime of the intermediate state play only a minor role.

    Notes: Using time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy we show that electron relaxation processes via inelastic electron–electron scattering are efficient energy dissipation channels not only in bulk metals but also in extremely small transition metal clusters. The photoelectron spectra of optically excited Pd3−, Pd4−, and Pd7− reveal effective electron relaxation times of less than 100 fs. Moreover the relaxation times vary with cluster size. In comparison to simple metal clusters the bulklike inelastic scattering rates in open d-shell transition metal clusters are attributed to the larger valence electron level density. An energy transfer to the vibrational degrees of freedom occurs within 10 ps. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have produced an endohedrally doped fullerene that shows a metal-like density of states at the Fermi level. Individual La@C60 clusters deposited onto graphite exhibit a zero band gap as observed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy on single clusters at room temperature. Moreover, we find that an isolated La@C60 cluster on graphite shows a reversible opening of a band gap at a transition temperature of ∼28 K. The transition is associated with a freezing of the vibrational motion of the La atom inside the fullerene cage. The metallic behavior of La@C60 is attributed to the presence of a dynamical dipole in the single cluster. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
