Summary In 24 conscious male subjects the responses of systemic arterial pressure to changes of the transmural blood pressure in the carotid sinus area have been recorded. Transmural pressure was changed by increasing or decreasing air pressure in the neck and head region by means of a pressure helmet. From the results the conclusion can be drawn that in man the sensitivity of the carotid sinus buffering reflexes is maximal at arterial blood pressures below 60–70 mm Hg, while it becomes very small at pressures above normal. This means that the arterial baroreceptors of man mainly afford protection against arterial hypotension, and that their buffering capacity against hypertension is almost negligible.

Zusammenfassung Bei 24 kreislaufgesunden männlichen Versuchspersonen wurde das Verhalten des arteriellen Blutdrucks bei Veränderung des transmuralen Drucks im Carotissinusgebiet (lokale Erhöhung bzw. Verminderung des äußeren Luftdrucks mit Hilfe eines Druckhelms bei gleichzeitiger Außenluftatmung) untersucht. Dabei ergab sich, daß die Pufferkapazität der Carotissinus-Receptoren ihr Maximum bei transmuralen Drucken unterhalb 60 bis 70 mm Hg zeigt, oberhalb des normalen Druckbereichs dagegen nur noch relativ gering ist. Normalerweise scheinen demnach die von den arteriellen Baroreceptoren ausgehenden Kreislaufreflexe bei Abfall des arteriellen Blutdrucks, wesentlich stärker als bei Blutdrucksteigerung wirksam zu werden.
