Notes: Particle orbits for a linear magnetic cusp configuration, characteristic for magnetic reconnection, are analyzed within the guiding center approximation. A class of particle orbits encircling the magnetic X-line is identified and the orbit phase space partition is obtained and characterized as a function of dimensionless parameters controlling the orbit topology. The large majority of particles are found to be trapped in the direction of the X-line implying large neoclassical corrections to the plasma resistivity. This may be the key in explaining the high rates of collisionless magnetic reconnection observed in nature. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Fast collisionless magnetic reconnection is driven and observed in a toroidal magnetic cusp. For low values of the toroidal (guide) magnetic field, reconnection occurs without the formation of a macroscopic current channel. In the absence of a current channel, the measured plasma potential and poloidal flows are consistent with predictions based upon single particle theory. Only for large values of the toroidal magnetic field compared to cusp poloidal field is a current channel present. Also in this case single particle orbit theory provides a good description of the anomalous resistivity observed experimentally. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A set of solutions to the drift kinetic equations is presented describing collisionless magnetic reconnection in a linear magnetic cusp. Effects not accounted for in fluid models cause strong anisotropic features in the velocity distribution function. A mechanism responsible for breaking the "frozen-in law" is identified. This mechanism has its origin in curvature and ∇B drifts and is consistent with fast reconnection. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The first measurements of plasma parameters in a discharge created by electron cyclotron resonance heating in a toroidal cusp configuration are discussed along with the predictions of particle orbits and confinement from a guiding center model. The configuration appears to be suitable for basic investigations of the physics of plasma flows and instabilities around a magnetic null, hence of magnetic reconnection. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The fast ion and α-particle diagnostic at JET is based on collective Thomson scattering of high power millimeter-wave radiation. The principal aim of the diagnostic will be the measurement of the spatially resolved velocity distribution of fast α particles when tritium is introduced in JET plasmas, although several other applications are foreseen. The diagnostic uses a 140 GHz, 500 kW, gyrotron as the source of probing radiation and a heterodyne detection system. The diagnostic came into operation during the last JET operational campaign. First measurements were made of the thermal and mildly suprathermal (induced by ion cyclotron resonance heating) ion feature. The results confirmed expectations, indicating that the diagnostic should give the predicted performance for observation of α-particle populations in the DT phase. The signal-to-noise ratio is limited by the noise on the background radiation (electron cyclotron emission), which has a minimum around 140 GHz only when JET is operated at B∼3.4 T. To further improve the S/N and to make the diagnostic suitable for operation at higher field, which is now being considered for some of the DT plasmas, a viewing dump will be installed before the DT phase. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] IN NATURE of Dec. 14, 1929 (vol. 124, p. 913), the result of an examination of some data giving the heights at which the meteors disappear has been published. There seemed to be a variation of these heights with the lunar hour-angle. By kind information from Dr. G. M. B. Dobson my attention was ...
