Notes: Abstract Many large Archaean epigenetic gold deposits show a broad spatial relationship to regional lineaments in greenstone belts, although in detail they are sited in subsidiary brittle-ductile fault structures. Fluids, originating from a deep source, follow a complex path and re-equilibrate with different lithologies and with metamorphic fluid during migration to higher crustal levels. Temperature and pressure conditions at or below the amphibolite/greenschist metamorphic boundary, where most gold deposits are located, favour the establishment of brittle-ductile and brittle subsidiary structures, the preferred structural setting of gold deposits. Physical gradients between the regional ductile structures and more brittle subsidiary structures ensure transient, strongly localized, fluid flow into the latter, where lower temperatures and suitable host rocks with high Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios favour gold-deposition. The multi-source origin and continuous re-equilibration of the fluid with crustal rock, which includes granitoid and greenstone-belt lithologies of different ages, is reflected in the diverse isotopic and geochemical signature of the gold deposits.

Notes: Abstract Rocks of early Proterozoic age (ca. 2100 Ma) host the major gold deposits in Ghana. The deposits are either located in mesothermal quartz vein systems or hosted in a quartz pebble conglomerate that represents a paleoplacer. Both types of mineralisation are largely confined to the Ashanti Belt, one of four parallel northeast-trending volcanic belts. While the stratigraphy and structure of the belts are similar, the Ashanti belt is characterised by a more tectonised northwest margin where most of the epigenetic gold deposits are located. In these deposits, gold mineralisation is located in faults that parallel the regional trend of the belts and were active late in the deformation history of the terrane. The auriferous quartz pebble conglomerate is part of a clastic sequence that is largely derived from the adjacent volcanic and plutonic rocks with the gold widely regarded as having originated from eroded vein deposits. Structural data, however, show that both the volcanic rocks and clastic sequence were deformed jointly prior to epigenetic gold mineralisation. Thus, the quartz vein deposits could not have been the source of the paleoplacer mineralisation. The paleoplacer gold could have originated from one of several possible sources but none has been unequivocally identified.

Notes: Abstract Many prairie potholes in North Dakota are filled with emergent aquatic vegetation. The paper describes briefly how evapotranspiration losses were determined for such potholes using a mass-transfer equation in which the coefficient was evaluated by means of a water budget. Vegetation, by its presence, reduces evaporation below the normal from a free water surface so much that the total seasonal (May - October) evapotranspiration loss is less than the normal evaporation loss from a pothole clear of vegetation.

Notes: Recently, language activists and linguists have begun using new technologies in projects aimed at revitalizing the practice of lesser-used languages. This review explores related work, emphasizing how practices of electronic mediation enabled by such technologies both shape and are informed by linguistic ideologies, which in turn crucially influence the possible revived use or abandonment of linguistic varieties. New technologies are treated as part of cultures of electronic mediation, connecting sociocultural valuations to mediated discourse. Their use often has important political implications, given that projects of language revitalization are often linked to claims of ethnolinguistic recognition. Finally, because documentation of lesser-used languages using digital technologies also results in the production of new cultural objects to be stored, displayed, and circulated, attention is also focused on the forms of sociality sustained by the creation and exchange of such electronic artifacts.

Notes: End effects give rise to cells of different frequencies appearing simultaneously across the span of a circular cylinder in the laminar Reynolds number range. Each cell is associated with a different angle between the vortex axis and the cylinder. König et al. [Phys. Fluids A 2, 1607 (1990)] suggested that the discontinuities in the Reynolds–Strouhal number relationship are due to the movement of the cell boundaries across the span with the Reynolds number. In this Letter, flow visualization of the parallel, intermediate, extreme and end-cell modes of vortex shedding supports these results.

Notes: There is experimental evidence that at least three discontinuities in the Strouhal number–Reynolds number relationship in the Reynolds number range 50–160 may exist under certain conditions. The appearance of discontinuities depends on how the cylinder is bounded at both ends, the aspect ratio, and the turbulence level of the oncoming flow. The discontinuity at Re≈90 observed by Tritton [J. Fluid Mech. 6, 547 (1959)] is therefore a three-dimensional effect. The discontinuities in the shedding frequency are accompanied by sudden changes in the shedding angle. Parallel vortex shedding results in the highest possible shedding frequency.

Notes: Based on the observation of vortex splitting in the laminar wake of thin flat plates placed parallel to the flow, an investigation on the consequences of such events for the von Kármán vortex street in the wake of circular cylinders was carried out. It was found that a "design break line'' of vortex axes can lead to the decoupling of a wake flow from the always present disturbances deriving from the ends. The decoupling gives rise to parallel vortex shedding of a slightly higher frequency, instead of the oblique or slanted vortex shedding at a lower frequency usually observed.
