Notes: Two external ion sources, an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) source for heavy ions and an atomic-beam source for polarized protons and deuterons, are currently under construction for the cyclotron at the Svedberg Laboratory (TSL), Uppsala. The sources will be placed in partly newly built localities outside the cyclotron hall, which will also contain an area for atomic-physics experiments with heavy ions from the ECR source. The beam-transport system, which will be common for the two ion sources, is based on magnetic elements.

Notes: The room-temperature ECR ion source at The Svedberg Laboratory, Uppsala, is being used as injector for the Gustaf Werner cylcotron as well as for atomic-physics experiments. In November 1990 the first heavy-ion beams from the ECR ion source were accelerated in the cyclotron. Nuclear-physics experiments have now taken data using beams of He2+, O5+, and N6+. The transmission through the cyclotron is typically 5%. The present energy record is 450 MeV N6+. The energy of the heavy-ion beams will be increased further by acceleration in the CELSIUS storage ring. Examples of atomic-physics experiments in preparation are emission spectroscopy of highly ionized atoms, in particular, to study the transitions between Rydberg states, and studies of electron transfer processes in collisions of slow multicharged ions with atoms. The studies of yrast transitions are of interest in the field of x-ray lasers and one motivation for the electron transfer studies is the importance of these phenomena in astrophysics and fusion research.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine structures and isotope shifts of 14 isotopes of Eu (Z=63) in the mass range 140≦A≦153, partly with isomeric states, have been measured in the atomic transitions at 4,594 Å and 4,627 Å, using the technique of collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The nuclear spins, the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments, and the changes in the mean square charge radii have been evaluated. These nuclear parameters clearly reflect the effects of theN=82 neutron-shell closure in the single-proton hole states with respect to the semi-magic gadolinium (Z=64), and theN=88−90 shape transition.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfme structure and isotope shift in the 6s 2 S 1/2−6p 2P3/2 line of Ba II (455.4 nm) have been measured by collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy for the neutron-rich isotopes139–146Ba and148Ba. Nuclear moments and mean square charge radii of these isotopes have been recalculated. The isotope shift of the isotope148Ba (T1/2=0.64 s) could be studied for the first time, yieldingδ〈r2〉138,148=1.245(3) fm2.

Notes: Abstract Long term liming and reacidification effects were studied in SW Sweden. This report is a concentrated summary. Lake liming reduces toxic levels of Al, Cd and Zn so that pH-sensitive species can survive. But it mobilizes nutrients and causes internal eutrophication, which in shallow lakes may give problems as macrophyte expansion. Reacidification kills much of the flora and fauna, that adapted during limed conditions. The reasons are lowered pH and toxic levels: Al 500 ug/1, Cd 0.4 ug/1 and Zn 50 ug/1. Sediments are fragile and temporary refuges for metals and nutrients. Conclusively, surface waters should be limed before they reach lakes.

Notes: Abstract Zooplankton has been studied in Lakes Östra Nedsjön and Ömmern (1974–94), two acidified lakes in South-Western Sweden. The former lake was first limed in 1971–73, and secondly in 1982. The first liming increased the pH-level from ca. 5.3 to 6, and the second one from ca. 5.8 to 7–7.5. The pH-value in Lake Ömmern was about 6.1 in 1973, but decreased to 5.3 in 1981, when liming raised the value to 6.5–7. After the first liming in Lake Ö. Nedsjön, the rotatorians represented in average 1% of the total volume of zooplankton. Among the copepods, which made up ca. 22% of the volume, Cyclops was frequent, and both Eudiaptomus gracilis and Heterocope appendiculata were recorded. After the second liming on the other hand the rotatorians increased to in average 28% of the total volume, while the volume of copepods was only ca. 6%. Heterocope disappeared, and Eudiaptomus and Cyclops, usually favoured by liming, were rare. Consequently the supply of larger forms of crustaceans, suitable as fish food was severely reduced. In Lake Ömmern the effects of acidification within the zooplankton were moderate. The species richness was about the same as in unacidified lakes. After liming the development of zooplankton was similar to that in most other limed lakes, i. e. increased frequency of rotatorians, cladocerans and Cyclops spp. In Lake Ö. Nedsjön, however, the small zooplankton volumes and the elimination of copepods was in contrast to the zooplankton development in other limed lakes and in unacidified ones.

Notes: Abstract Using the atomic-beam magnetic resonance method, hyperfine structure (h.f.s.) measurements have been performed in the2P1/2 electronic ground state of the neutron-deficient thallium isotopes193–202Tl. In the doubly odd isotopes, the magnetic dipole hyperfine interaction constantsa were determined, while in the odd-A isotopes, direct measurements of the nuclearg-factors,g I , were made. The electronicg-factor was measured in198Tl. The magnetic dipole moments of the doubly odd isotopes have been evaluated by a direct comparison with known values in the stable isotope203Tl. The moments of the odd-A isotopes are in agreement with pervious measurements by optical spectroscopy. A discussion of the magnetic dipole moments in terms of different nuclear models is included. The moments of the 2− nuclear ground states of the doubly odd isotopes may be interpreted as arising from a combination of the configurations 2− (πs1/2 vf5/2) and 2− (πs1/2 vp3/2).

Notes: Abstract The collinear fast-beam laser technique is being used to measure systematically hyperfine structures and isotope shifts of unstable nuclides in the rare-earth region. This brief report gives a general survey of the results obtained for the even-Z elements64Gd,66Dy,68Er and70Yb, with emphasis on the nuclear spins and moments. They allow a rather complete mapping of the single-particle structure and the development of nuclear deformation in the N 〉 82 region. The spins, magnetic moments and spectroscopic quadrupole moments of159–169Yb are presented in detail.
