Notes: The crystal structure of the 154-amino-acid form of human basic fibroblast growth factor (hbFGF154), probably representing the intact form of hbFGF as deduced from the open reading frame of hbFGF cDNA, was determined by X-ray crystallography and refined to a crystallographic residual of 19.0% for all data between 20.0 and 2.0 Å resolution. Crystals were obtained from recombinant hbFGF154 expressed in E. coli. hbFGF154 has the same overall structure as the N-terminus truncated 146-amino-acid form. The structure has a Kunitz-type fold and is built of 12 β-strands of which six antiparallel strands form a β-sheet barrel. In the structure it was possible to locate two additional residues at the N terminus and the last three C-terminal amino-acid residues, which seem to be disordered in all but one of the reported structures of the truncated form of hbFGF. The C-terminal amino-acid residues are part of the last β-strand through the formation of a hydrogen bond between the main-chain amide group of Ala152 and the carbonyl O atom of Pro28. An apparent phosphate ion is bound within the basic region on the surface of the molecule and has as ligands the side chains of Asn35, Arg128 and Lys133 and two water molecules. A slightly different hydrogen-bonding pattern to the phosphate ion is observed as compared with the sulfate ions in the truncated forms [Eriksson, Cousens & Matthews (1993). Protein Sci. 2, 1274–1284; Zhang, Cousens, Barr & Sprang (1991). Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA, 88, 3446–3450]. One molecule of β-mercaptoethanol forms a disulfide bridge to Cys77.

Notes: On grinding hard metal alloys containing cobalt, the dissolution of cobalt during 5 days was studied for nine commercial cutting fluids. After 1 day, a major part of the cobalt liberated from the material ground is found in solution. This percentage decreases when grinding is continued using the same coolant fluid. Only a small fraction of the cobalt is found in particles in the circulating fluid. The bulk must be in the sediment in the storage tank, where it does no harm to the workers' skin. The final concentration of cobalt found in some fluids may be hazardous.

Notes: Streptozotocin-induced diabetes is a well established model of diabetes in rodents. However, these small mammals differ from humans in a number of anatomical and physiological ways, in contrast to pigs, who are more similar to humans. No diabetic pig model has been used for the study of wound healing. Our hypothesis is that re-epithelialization would be delayed in the streptozotocin induced diabetic pig. Method: Diabetes was induced by injecting Streptozotocin into two three month old female Yorkshire pigs. 52 full thickness wounds were created on the dorsum and dressed with polyvinyl chambers to keep the wounds wet and to allow for wound fluid monitoring. Serum glucose and wound fluid glucose concentrations were monitored daily. Wound contraction was monitored and biopsies taken on multiple days for re-epithelialization measurements. Results: The serum glucose was significantly increased for the duration of the experiment (〉350 mg/dl). Wound fluid glucose closely followed serum glucose concentration. There was no statistical difference between the contraction rates of wounds in diabetic pigs and healthy pigs. Re-epithelialization was significantly delayed in diabetic wounds.〈table frame="topbot"〉〈tgroup cols="4" align="left"〉〈colspec colnum="1" colname="col1" align="left"/〉〈colspec colnum="2" colname="col2" align="left"/〉〈colspec colnum="3" colname="col3" align="left"/〉〈colspec colnum="4" colname="col4" align="left"/〉〈thead valign="bottom"〉〈row rowsep="1"〉ReepithelializationDay 12Day 14Day 16〈tbody valign="top"〉Diabetic pig38%59%82%Healthy pig96%100%100% Conclusion: Epidermal regeneration of full thickness wounds is significantly delayed in the Streptozotocin induced diabetic pig. This is a very useful model of impaired wound healing because of the close similarity to human skin. The wound chambers add the advantage of monitoring and manipulating the wound environment.

Notes: The aim of this study was to make descriptive analyses of the muscle activities in the lower extremity during maximal sprinting. Nine healthy sprinters were examined during maximal sprinting using telemetric electromyography (EMG). Seven muscles of the lower extremities were investigated: biceps femoris, medial hamstrings (semimembranosus and semitendinosus), rectus femoris, gluteus maximus, tibialis anterior, lateral gastrocnemius and medial gastrocnemius. The recorded EMG levels during running were expressed as percentage of maximum voluntary isometric contractions (%max EMG). For each muscle, the normalized EMG was plotted during the whole running stride cycle and is presented for each muscle. The reason for using this method is to show that it is possible to compare different muscle activities in a runner as well as to make comparisons between runners. Lateral and medial hamstrings and gluteus maximus showed similar activities with peak levels of EMG during footstrike. Rectus femoris had a two-peak activity, with one peak at the middle of the stance phase and the other during the swing phase. The tibialis anterior also showed a two-peak activity, but with the peaks at the beginning of the swing phase and just before foot-strike. The highest activities of the medial and lateral gastrocnemius occurred just before toe-off.

Notes: Low back pain is a common complaint among competitive cross-country skiers. Fifty-three top male and 34 female skiers in the age group 16–25 were interviewed with a questionnaire regarding anthropometric parameters, training variables, back pain and other injuries. The frequency of back pain was 64% in the whole group, men affected slightly more often than women. Back pain was defined as previous or present recurrent skiing correlated backache that more or less affected skiing ability. Diagonal skiing style was the most commonly back pain-inducing style, whereas no skier experienced back pain when “skating” only. The low back was the predominant location of pain. Anthropometric and training variables seemed to be of little value in predicting back pain.
