    Notes: Summary Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is a strong and independent risk factor for coronary heart disease. We assessed the potential relationship between plasma Lp(a) levels, apo(a) phenotypes and coronary heart disease in a population of NIDDM patients. Seventy-one patients with coronary heart disease, who previously have had transmural myocardial infarction, or significant stenosis on coronary angiography, or positive myocardial thallium scintigraphy, or in combination, were compared with 67 patients without coronary heart disease, who tested negatively upon either coronary angiography, myocardial thallium scintigraphy or a maximal exercise test. The prevalence of plasma Lp(a) levels elevated above the threshold for increased cardiovascular risk (〉0.30 g/l) was significantly higher (p=0.005) in patients with coronary heart disease (33.8%) compared to the control group (13.4%). The relative risk (odds ratio) of coronary heart disease among patients with high Lp(a) concentrations was 3.1 (95% confidence interval, 1.31–7.34;p=0.01). The overall frequency distribution of apo(a) phenotypes differed significantly between the two groups (p=0.043). However, the frequency of apo(a) isoforms of low apparent molecular mass (≤700 kDa) was of borderline significance (p=0.067) between patients with or without coronary heart disease (29.6% and 16.4%, respectively). In this Caucasian population of NIDDM patients, elevated Lp(a) levels were associated with coronary heart disease, an association which was partially accounted for by the higher frequency of apo(a) isoforms of small size. In multivariate analyses, elevated levels of Lp(a) were independently associated with coronary heart disease (odds ratio 3.48, p=0.0233).

    Notes: Low-pressure plane impact experiments performed on Fe-32 wt. % Ni-0.035 wt. % C alloy revealed, after recovery, markings which are attributed to shock-induced inhomogeneities. Shear of the material does not occur homogeneously, but in preferential planar regions. These regions are made visible by a martensitic transformation [fcc (austenite)→bcc (martensite)] produced by the tensile pulses generated by the reflection of the compressive shock wave at a free surface. The bands with higher plastic deformation served as preferential nucleation sites for martensitic transformation. The formation of these bands is attributed to inhomogeneous yielding due to work softening of the material during tensile loading.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé On passe en revue les critères d'instabilité de fissures dynamiques proposées jusqu'à présent. On présente et on compare les conditions de longueur de fissure, d'amplitude de pulsation et de durée de pulsation prédites par chaque critère en vue de décrire l'instabilité des fissures sous des mises en charge ondulées. Pour établir une discrimination entre les critères, on a construit une base de données en procédant à des essais d'impact sur des plaques éprouvettes en Epoxy dans lesquelles de minces disques circulaires étaient noyés en vue de représenter des fissures internes en forme d'ongle. Le comportement instable observé pour cette fissure sous des contraintes pulsées inférieures à 2 µs et d'amplitude variable a été le mieux décrit par un critère qui requiert que l'intensité de contrainte dynamique excède la ténacité à la rupture dynamique durant un certain temps minimum.
    Notes: Abstract Previously proposed dynamic crack instability criteria are reviewed. The conditions of crack length, pulse amplitude, and pulse duration predicted by each criterion for crack instability under stress wave loads are presented and compared. To discriminate among these criteria, a data base was generated by performing plate impact experiments on epoxy specimens embedded with thin circular disks that acted as internal penny-shaped cracks. The observed instability behavior of these cracks under 2-µs stress pulses of various amplitudes was best described by a criterion that requires the dynamic stress intensity to exceed the dynamic fracture toughness for a certain minimum time.
