    Notes: Puccinia recondita Roberge ex Desmaz., is an important disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) worldwide. To estimate the genetic progress in reducing grain yield losses through breeding for resistance to leaf rust, replicated trials including 15 popular CIMMYT germplasm-derived wheat cultivars released between 1966 and 1988 in northwestern Mexico were sown in that same area; normal and late planting dates were used for four and two seasons, respectively. Leaf rust epidemics were established by inoculating spreader rows planted adjacent to plots of the cultivars which were not protected by fungicide. Average losses in grain yields of the cultivars due to leaf rust ranged between 6.6 and 6.2% and were highly correlated with final disease severity (r=0.898, P〈0.01) and relative area under the disease progress curve (r=0.917, P〈0.01). The losses in grain yield were mostly due to reductions in kernel weight, kernels per square meter, and grain fill rate. Grain yield losses (7.7–10.4%) in slow rusting cultivars Cocoraque 75, Nacozari 76, Opata 85, and Bacanora 88 were similar to those observed in the immune ’Oasis 86‚ (6.6%) or resistant ’Ciano 79‚ (10.2%). The average annual progress in grain yield potential achieved through breeding averaged over the six trials was estimated to be 0.48% (r 2=0.38, P〈0.01) for fungicide protected and 2.21% (r 2=0.47, P〈0.01) when not protected by fungicide. We conclude that while the grain yield potential of CIMMYT-derived cultivars has increased significantly over the years, progress in protecting this yield potential through the incorporation of genes that confer slow rusting resistance has been more dramatic.

    Notes: Triticum aestivum L.) disease resistance genes transferred from alien sources are often associated with undesirable traits. Replicated trials using near-isogenic lines of spring wheat "Seri 82" were conducted for 2 yr under non-moisture stress and simulated moisture stress conditions to determine the effects of the 7DL.7Ag and 1BL.1RS translocations [from Agropyron elongatum (Host) Beauv, and Secale cereale L., respectively] on grain yield and related traits. Mean grain yield of the 1B lines was significantly higher (3.2%) than that of the 1BL.1RS translocation lines in non-moisture stress trials, but not significantly higher in the moisture stress trials. The mean grain yields of the five highest yielding reconstituted Seri 82 genotypes (1BL.1RS) were significantly lower than that of the genotypes without the 1BL.1RS translocation in non-moisture stress (3.2%) and moisture stress (5.2%) conditions. Incorporation of the 7DL.7Ag translocation caused a significant increase (9%) in biomass at harvest in non-moisture stress trials. The mean grain yields of the five highest yielding 7DL.7Ag lines were significantly higher (8.2%) than the reconstituted Seri 82 genotypes in non-moisture stress conditions and more than 16% lower under moisture stress. Lower grain yields of the 7DL.7Ag lines under moisture stress could be due to their excessive pre-heading biomass production. Several yield-related traits of the near-isogenic genotypes varied significantly. Presence of each translocation caused lateness and, when present together, the 1BL.1RS and 7DL.7Ag translocations delayed heading and maturity by 7 and 5 d, respectively. The genetic background of the recipient wheat can affect the utility of a translocation.

    Notes: Abstract The strongly shape driving πh9/2[541]l/2− configuration with α=+1/2 exhibits some anomalous, and so far unexplained, features concerning the crossing frequency, ħωc, the aligned angular momentum, ix, and interaction strength, at the alignment of the first pair of i13/2 quasineutrons in several odd-Z rare earth-nuclei. The h9/2[541]1/2− and h11/2[523]7/2− bands have been studied in the stably deformed rare-earth nucleus163Tm to investigate these features. A difference in band crossing frequency of ∼ 80 keV between the two bands is found. Rotational bands built on these two configurations have been found to cross in the spin range I=25/2–29/2 ħ. Theγ-decay pattern between the two bands is established in the crossing region and analysed in terms of a moderate shape difference between them. A theoretical estimate of the size of the interaction strength between the two bands is presented and compared to the experimental value. The observed band structure in163Tm is very similar to that of167Lu which has 2 protons and 2 neutrons in addition. This observation is discussed in relation to the similarity of the yrast bands of the two even-even “core” nuclei162Er and166Yb, for which theγ-transition energies are identical within ∼0.2 keV below the vi13/2 crossing.

    Notes: Abstract Fifty-five spring bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars, mostly released between 1975 and 1991 in eight leaf rust-prone spring wheat growing regions of the former USSR, were tested in the seedling growth stage for reaction to 15 Mexican pathotypes of Puccinia recondita f. sp. tritici. In total, seven known and at least two unknown genes were identified, either singly or in combinations: Lr3 (7 cultivars), Lr10 (14), Lr13 (5), Lr14a (1), Lr16 (1), Lr23 (3); the unknown genes were identified in 14 cultivars. The first unknown gene could be either Lr9, Lr19, or Lr25; however, the second unknown gene in 9 cultivars was different from any named gene. Twelve of the 15 pathotypes are virulent for this gene, hence its use in breeding for resistance will be limited. The cultivars were also evaluated at two field locations in Mexico with two pathotypes in separate experiments. The area under the disease progress curve and the final disease rating of the cultivars indicated genetic diversity for genes conferring adult plant resistance. based on the symptoms of the leaf tip necrosis in adult plants, resistance gene Lr34 could be present in at least 20 cultivars. More than half of the cultivars carry high to moderate levels of adult plant resistance and were distributed in each region.

    Notes: Abstract The most important breeding objectives in crop improvement are improving grain yield, grain quality, and resistances to various biotic and abiotic stresses. The objectives of our study were to compare two crossing and four selection schemes for grain yield, yield traits, and slow rusting resistance to leaf rust (Puccinia recondita) based on additive genes in wheat (Triticum aestivum), and to identify the most efficient crossing and selection methodologies in terms of genetic gains and cost efficiency. Segregating populations were derived from 18 simple crosses and the same number of top (three-way) crosses. Half of the crosses were derived from Yecora 70 and the other half from Veery #10 as the common leaf rust susceptible parents. The four selection schemes were: pedigree, modified bulk (F2 and F1-top as pedigree, selected lines in F3, F4, F2-top, F3-top as bulk; and pedigree in F5 and F4-top populations), selected bulk (selected plants in F2, F3, F4, F1-top, F2-top and F3-top as bulk; and pedigree in F5 and F4-top populations), and nonselected bulk (bulk in F2, F3, F4, F1-top, F2-top and F3-top; and pedigree in F5 and F4-top populations). A total of 320 progeny lines, parents and checks were tested for grain yield, other agronomic traits and leaf rust resistance during the 1992/93 and 1993/94 seasons in Ciudad Obregon (Sonora State, Mexico) which represents a typical high yielding irrigated site. The influence of the type of cross and the selection scheme on the mean grain yield and other traits of the progenies was minimal. The selection of parents was the most important feature in imparting yield potential and other favourable agronomic traits. Moreover, the highest yielding lines were distributed equally. Progeny lines derived from Veery #10 crosses had significantly higher mean grain yield compared to those derived from the Yecora 70 crosses. Furthermore, a large proportion of the highest yielding lines also originated from Veery #10 crosses. Mean leaf rust severity of the top cross progenies was lower than that of the simple cross progenies possibly because two parents contributed resistance to top cross progenies. Mean leaf rust severity of the nonselected bulk derivatives was twice that of lines derived from the other three schemes. Selected bulk appears to be the most attractive selection scheme in terms of genetic gains and cost efficiency.
