    Notes: The isothermal crystallization process of poly(ether-ether-ketone) from the glass has been studied in real time by dielectric spectroscopy and x-ray scattering experiments. The combination of these two techniques revealed a complete picture of the crystallization processes from the point of view of both amorphous and crystalline phases. Analysis of results shows that the sample morphology consists of lamellar stacks, separated by rather broad amorphous regions. The lamellar stacks are highly crystalline (∼70%), as obtained from both dielectric and x-ray scattering measurements, and the amorphous phase within the stacks is constrained up to a level where no segmental relaxation is possible. The remaining amorphous phase, after completion of the primary crystallization process, still has a certain mobility, but it is significantly slower than the initial amorphous mobility. Dielectric data and x-ray results are found to be highly congruent. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In an attempt to study the specific influence of cross-linking on the α relaxation in polymer networks, a series of model heterocyclic polymer networks (HPN) with well-defined cross-link densities and constant concentration of dipolar units were studied. Model HPN systems were prepared by simultaneous trimerization of 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI) and hexyl isocyanate (HI). These HPN systems were characterized by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy in the 10−1 Hz〈F〈105 Hz frequency range and in the 123 K〈T〈493 K temperature interval. The α relaxation in these systems depends on network density and shifts toward higher temperatures as the cross-link density increases for high HMDI/HI ratios. Discussion of the α-relaxation shape in light of recent models indicates that segmental motions above the glass transition systematically experience a growing hindrance with increasing degree of cross-linking. Description of the temperature dependence of relaxation times according to the strong–fragile scheme clearly shows that fragility increases as polymer network develops. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The α relaxation of a series of ether–ketone model compounds was studied to quantify the effect of molecular stiffness on the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts stretching exponential. The obtained values decrease with increasing stiffness and are within the theoretical bounds predicted for systems with spatial dimensionality varying from 2 to 1. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The relaxation behavior of a series of ether-ketone oligomers, considered as model compounds of poly(ether-ketone-ketone), was studied by means of dielectric spectroscopy. The dynamics of the α relaxation of ether-ketone model compounds as compared with that of poly(arylether-ketone-ketone) (PEKK) (50/50), shows up differences which can be attributed to the variation of inter- and intramolecular correlations with the chain length. Model compounds exhibit a nearly similar degree of cooperativity regardless the differences in Tg values. The PEKK (50/50) polymer exhibits stronger cooperativity than the oligomers suggesting that in poly(ether-ketone-ketone)s molecular motions above Tg extend to more than one monomeric unit. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Thermal diffusivity for carbon fiber composites was measured using different fiber types and polymer matrices. Photothermal testing was performed in the various directions parallel and perpendicular to the carbon fiber axis by different photothermal configurations. By focusing the laser beam with a spherical lens, local inhomogeneities of the composite surface in the range of 10 μm are distinguished. When focusing is done with the aid of a cylindrical lens an averaging over larger scales of the photothermal deflected signal takes place. The results for various carbon fiber materials are discussed in terms of thermal diffusion lengths and thermal diffusivity values. It is shown that the thermal photodeflection method is suitable for measuring anisotropy in oriented carbon fiber composites. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A novel experimental setup is described which allows one to obtain detailed information on structural and dynamical changes in polymers during crystallization. This technique includes simultaneous measurements of small angle-wide angle x-ray scattering and dielectric spectroscopy (SWD). The capabilities of the technique have been probed by following in real time the crystallization process of a model crystallizable polymer: poly(ethylene terephthalate). By performing these experiments, simultaneous information from both, the amorphous and the crystalline phase is obtained providing a complete description of changes occurring during a crystallization process. The SWD technique opens up new promising perspectives for the experimental study of the relation between structure and dynamics in materials science. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Reproducible memory and switching effects have been detected in polycarbonate-graphite composites. Memory effects are characterized in the range of 0–1 kV/cm. It is suggested that they involve electrothermal and electromechanical phenomena. Switching effects occur above 2 kV/cm and are related to an intrinsic electric breakdown of the material. The threshold field increases with increasing thickness of the composite film. The temperature dependence and level of conductivity reached point toward a prevailing electron tunneling mechanism.

    Notes: Abstract The dielectric properties of a series of poly(ester-ether-carbonate) multiblock terpolymers have been investigated as a function of ether and carbonate composition in the frequency range of 103–106 Hz. The degree of polymerization of the samples was determined by viscosimetry measurements. The weight fraction, degree of crystallinity, and melting temperatures were characterized by means of x-ray diffraction and DSC methods. Dielectric behavior has been discussed in terms of Havriliak-Negami formulation. The variation of the dielectric properties with temperature has been associated with two relaxation processes: a) the γ-relaxation process observed at low temperature, which is associated to local motion of polar groups attached to both the soft and the hard segments, and b) the β process assigned to long-range molecular motions above the glass transition temperature.

    Notes: Abstract  The dielectric properties of chitosan films with a degree of deacetylation of 86% have been investigated in the frequency range of 103–106 Hz covering a broad range of temperatures from −150 to 150 °C. The variation of the dielectric pro-perties with temperature has been associated with two dielectric processes: (a) a local relaxation attributed to the presence of hydrogen-bonded water appearing at low temperatures (b) a conduction process related to water molecules which becomes desorbed upon heating at T〉80 °C. Isothermal dielectric experiments have been performed in order to follow, in real time, the occurrence of both, the water sorption and desorption processes.
