    Notes: Infusion devices for continuous and precise drug administration are indispensable tools in anaesthesia and critical care medicine. Problems such as start-up delays, non-continuous flow and susceptibility to hydrostatic pressure changes at low infusion rates resulting in accidental bolus release or prolonged flow interruption are inherent to current infusion technology. In order to improve precise drug delivery, an innovative technical concept has been realised in a novel microvolumetric infusion pump (MVIP) device. The MVIP principle includes repeated filling and emptying of a non-compliant microsyringe without the use of valves. The performance of the MVIP prototype has been evaluated and compared with standard syringe infusion pump assemblies. The novel MVIP concept has thereby proven to eliminate most problems during infusion start-up, steady state flow and vertical pump displacement, and has the potential of revolutionising infusion technology and setting a new dimension in patient safety.

    Notes: Abstract. The importance of spatial organization for the evolutionary stability of trans-acting replicase systems ( $T\buildrel X \over \longrightarrow 2T)$ , where T is a general member of a combinatorial family including the special catalyst X, is now well established, by analytical and Monte Carlo models [1,2]. Complex formation as an intermediate step in replication ( $X + T\rightleftharpoons XT\to X + 2T)$ , besides refining the model, enhances co-localization of replicase X and templates T and is shown here to thereby contribute to the evolutionary stability of the catalyst. Applying the established individual molecule stochastic PRESS-framework [3], the performances of cooperative replication with and without intermediate complex formation are compared, and the beneficial effect of complex formation as enhancing stability is studied numerically under various conditions. The results obtained are of value for studies of prebiotic evolution, but also point towards a possible mechanism for stabilizing replication systems in adaptive molecular engineering.

Using values of electric field gradients obtained from ab-initio calculations, the field dependence of the longitudinal muon polarization is calculated for Si∶B and Si∶Al and compared to the contributions from paramagnetic bond-center muonium.

    Notes: Abstract A useful guide to detecting quadrupole level crossing resonance (QLCR) spectra is to search in the vicinity of BE\cdot(\gamman/\gamma_μ), where BE is the onset magnetic field for the decoupling of the quadrupole interaction, as seen in muon spin rotation linewidths. More detailed predictions of the positions and intensities of the resonances require numerical simulations taking account of the local geometry of the muon site. We present such simulations for muons adjacent to nuclei of spin 9/2 and demonstrate a pronounced dependence on the anisotropy of the quadrupole coupling tensor. Simulations for the specific cases of muons located at the octahedral and tetrahedral interstices in niobium metal are compared with the experimentally detected spectrum in a polycrystalline sample.
