Notes: Two environments of phosphate deposition within carbonate rocks are distinguished on the basis of the relationship between phosphate content and the foraminiferal plankton/benthos (P/B) ratio in Senonian-Maastrichtian chalks of Galilee, Northern Israel:(1) A normal marine environment of phosphate deposition during Santonian time. This environment is characterized by a low, normal P2O5 content and a positive correlation between P/B ratio and P2O5. Since it is assumed that the P/B ratio increases with the depth of the sea, it is suggested that the phosphate content in carbonate rocks can be employed as a bathymetric indicator.(2) An “abnormal” high phosphate deposition environment, found mainly in Upper Campanian sediments and related genetically to the economic phosphorite deposits in the Negev (Central Israel). The negative correlation of P/B ratio to P2O5 is caused by a shallowing of the sea and a continuous increase in P2O5, (e.g., by upwelling currents or a terrigenous supply) throughout the Upper Campanian.

Notes: The Judean Mountains’ anticlinorium, Israel, a part of the Syrian Arc fold system, underwent several phases of compressional folding, uplift and faulting in post-Turonian through Quaternary times. This study emphasizes the earliest tectonic phase of earIy Late Coniacian age. Ostracode biozonation clearly indicates the duration and extension of Senonian sedimentation and timing of onlap over the evolving Judean Mountains’ structure.

Notes: Abstract Copper mineralization occurs within the thick Cretaceous to Neogene sedimentary cover of central and northern Israel. Two distinct types of copper-rich anomalies are encountered. One form of copper mineralization is characterized by the presence of copper minerals such as malachite, atacamite, paratacamite, chrysocolla, and/or chalcopyrite forming veins and concretions within the sedimentary host rocks. The second type of copper enrichment is found dispersed within iron oxide veins associated with enrichments of other trace metals such as Ni, V, Zn, Co, Mo, and As. Both forms of copper anomalies lie along and are confined to the vicinity of tectonic elements. These features may be the surface expression of the longitudinal faults of the Dead Sea Rift Valley, of the transverse shear zone of southern and central Negev, or of the EW-trending horsts and grabens of central Israel. In many cases the copper anomalies are found near to or at the contact of volcanic bodies of intermediate to basic composition; in others, they are found in the vicinity of thermal springs. The fault zones may have provided conduits along which solutions, in places possibly briny, could have risen and leached subsurface mineralized volcanic or sedimentary bodies.

Notes: Abstract Epigenetic manganese mineralization occurs within Cretaceous carbonate strata of Israel. This mineralization is structurally controlled. In southern Israel, manganese- and iron-bearing waters rising along fault zones precipitated these metals as different redox conditions were encountered. The manganese and associated trace-metals are believed to be leached from magmatic bodies by corrosive deep-seated brines in southern Israel and circulating meteoric waters in northern Israel.

Notes: Abstract  Chalk is widely distributed and well exposed in Israel. For thousands of years tunnels for various purposes have been excavated in this rock mass. This paper focuses on the applicability of the Q and RMR rock mass classification to chalk. From field measurements undertaken in seven different tunnels it has been concluded that the Q and RMR classification methods were too conservative. It is therefore suggested that a modification of the present classification methods, or a new classification, based on the chalk's strength is required.
