Notes: Treatment of stainless steels in an rf-powered nitrogen plasma achieves a much increased rate of nitriding, as well as higher hardness and corrosion resistance than traditional nitriding. Small amounts of adsorbed hydrogen are found to be necessary initially, and the process of nitriding is modeled on the basis of this hydrogen increasing the surface sticking coefficient for nitrogen, which is followed by nitrogen diffusion into bulk in the form of nitrogen-vacancy (weakly bound) pairs. The detailed microstructural role of chromium in the process is also discussed.

Notes: [Auszug] Kidney transplantation has been one of the major medical advances of the past 30 years. However, tissue availability remains a major obstacle. This can potentially be overcome by the use of undifferentiated or partially developed kidney precursor cells derived from early embryos and fetal tissue. ...

Notes: Abstract A caesium ion beam has been used to excite electron emission from Mg, Al, AlAs and GaAs. The portions of the electron emission spectra that result from Auger transitions are compared with previously reported spectra generated with different primary ion beams. It is observed that 10 keV Cs+-ion bombardment produces very few excited ions with two 2p vacancies. Evidence for two atomic-like peaks discussed by previous authors, but not unambiguously identified, is also presented.

Notes: Abstract Ion-induced electron emission from solid surfaces is studied using a beam of caesium ions. Features of the spectra obtained during depth profiling of layered structures suggest a novel technique for investigating ion-induced Auger processes. Depth profiles are presented in terms of measured secondary ion signals, electron-induced Auger emission, and the intensities of features in the ion-induced electron spectra. It is shown that changes in features of the ion-induced electron spectra can be related to changes of chemical composition and sputtering probability. These help in the interpretation of variations in secondary-ion yields with matrix composition during depth profiling.

Notes: Summary Plasma levels of free fatty acids were investigated in 15 healthy control persons and in 15 diabetics not receiving insulin during a 60 min infusion of 0.5 mg noradrenaline in 300 ml of physiological saline. Fasting levels of free fatty acids were 562 ± 207 μEq/l in the control persons and 694 ± 179 μEq/l in the diabetics. The difference between these two values is statistically not significant. Rise of FFA levels during the infusion was similar in both groups investigated. Lack of insulin in diabetics apparently has no activating influence on the hormone-sensitive lipase.

Notes: Abstract A biogeographic analysis of 26 species of trees and shrubs occurring in the Paraná River Delta (32° to 34 °30′ South latitude, 58° to 61° West longitude, Argentina) was performed to study the floristic and structural differences among deltaic woodland communities. Traditionally these variations have been interpreted as a consequence of the differential influence of local island geomorphology and flood dynamics on floristic successions. We performed a cluster analysis of collection site, obtained maps showing the joint occurrence of the species of each community, and related species ranges with the presence of possible migration corridors. Results suggest that, in addition to local variations in topography and flood persistence, changes in floristic richness can be understood as a consequence of the differential efficiency of the Paraná and Uruguay Rivers as migration corridors for tropical species into temperate latitudes. Geomorphical stability of riverbeds and fluvial dynamic differences between rivers are discussed in relation to how they may explain the more efficient migration of species along the flood plain of the Uruguay River compared to the Paraná River. Results allow us to re-interpret the relative importance of both rivers in the establishment of tropical and subtropical species in temperate latitudes, and to add a regional explanation for the observed floristic heterogeneity.
