Notes: Summary Positronium reactions with Cu(II) ions in aqueous solution were investigated by measuring the concentration dependence of lifetime spectra and of 1D-ACAR curves for the following Cu (II) complexes: [Cu(H2O)6[2+, [Cu(NH3)4 (H2O)2]2+ and [Cu(EDTA)(H2O)]2−. The combined analysis of lifetime and ACAR data shows that Cu(II) ions:a) reduce the formation of positronium (inhibition effect),b) promote both ortho ⇌ para conversion and redox reactions. It was also found that inhibition and reaction rate constants are affected by the ligand type.

Notes: Abstract In order to ascertain possible relationships between the rate constants, KSE, of positronium, Ps, spin exchange /SE/ reactions promoted by 3d aqua ions and the electron configuration of the ion, the KSE's of Mn aq 2+ and Co aq 2+ aqua ions were measured together with that of [Cr(NH3)6]3+. The KSE's values obtained are discussed together with those of the Cr aq 3+ , Fe aq 2+ , Ni aq 2+ and [Ni(NH3)6]2+ ions previously measured. It was found that Cr aq 3+ and Mn aq 2+ KSE's are ∼1 M−1ns−1, while those of Fe aq 2+ , Co aq 2+ and Ni aq 2+ ions are ∼2.5 M−1ns−1. Thus the KSE values of 3d aqua ions do not depend solely on the number of their unpaired electrons as it was found for the 4f aqua ions. The trend observed parallels that of the electron delocalization from the metal atom; the delocalization occurs only with Fe aq 2+ , Co aq 2+ and Ni aq 2+ ions, but not with the Cr aq 3+ and Mn aq 2+ aqua ions. The trend of the KSE's of aqua, ammine and perhaps of chloro complexes parallels that of ligand capabilities to cause d-electron cloud expansion, and thus d-electron delocalization from metal atoms.

Notes: Abstract The rate constants k CR of orthointo para-positronium conversion reactions promoted by 3d complexes are linearly correlated with the electron delocalization of unpaired metal electrons caused by ligands, as measured by the ratio β between the interelectronic repulsion parameters in complexes and in the free gaseous ions (1 〉 β ≥ 0). The β values may be evaluated by means of the following empirical equation: β = 1 t M h L, where t M and h L are characteristic constants of 3d ions and ligands, respectively. By measuring k CR and applying the correlations mentioned above, h L constants may be derived providing that t M is known. The method was used to measure the h L value of N− 3, not yet known, and to check that of Cl− ligand.

Notes: Abstract The rate constants, k CR, of ortho- into para-positronium conversion reactions promoted by paramagnetic 3d complexes are linearly correlated with the electron delocalization, β, of unpaired metal electrons caused by ligands, β being the ratio between the inter-electronic repulsion parameters in complexes and in the free gaseous ions. By applying a procedure previously described the β values of MnII, CoII, NiII complexes with dimethylurea were deduced from the mentioned correlations and compared with those of complexes with urea obtained both by the method of Ps reactions here applied and that based on UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy.
