Summary The decline in numbers of the capercaillie (Tetrao urugallus) as the result of intensive reforestation measures in the war and post-war years becomes understandable on the basis of the facts presented in the foregoing paper. Of the capercaillie ranges examined in 1965, it was found that at least 34% of the area was covered by stems of the fifth and sixth age-classes. According to the above investigations a high proportion of the 5th and even older age classes is often associated with high food reserves, which is characteristic of the pine stands of the Lausitz Plain, presently inhabited by capercaillies. AVaccinium spp. cover of at least 5% but generally between 25 and 100% is also typical. Likewise, stands with an understory and a management oriented as much as possible toward natural regeneration are found in many capercaillie habitats. Examples from the past prove that the maintainence of a high percentage of old stands in pine regions most probably is of especial importance for the proper management of capercaillie populations.

Résumé La diminution de l'Urogalle enregistrée à la suite des abattages d'arbres importants pendant et après la guerre peut trouver une explication sur base des constatations suivantes. Dans les territoires à grand tétras analysés en 1965, les 5e et 6e classes d'âge couvrent au moins 34% de l'étendue. L'on constate que les peuplements de 5e classe d'âge et des classes d'âge plus élevées recèlent généralement des ressources alimentaires importantes, ce qui constitue du reste une caractéristique frappante des pineraies des plaines de Lusace (Lausitz) colonisées actuellement encore par le grand tétras: un couvert de Vaccinium d'au moins 5%, ou, plus fréquemment, de 25 à 100% y est typique. Des peuplements a sous-étage et une sylviculture orientée vers la régénération naturelle caractérisent aussi de nombreuses stations à grand tétras. Au moyen d'exemples tirés du passé on vérifie enfin que, dans les massifs à pins, la mise en réserve d'un grand nombre de peuplements âgés favorisait particulièrement le développement des effectifs de l'Urogalle.

Zusammenfassung Die Abnahme des Auerhuhns infolge starker Einschlagsmaßnahmen in den Kriegs- und Nachkriegsjahren kann auf Grund der angeführten Tatsachen verständlich werden. Bei den 1965 untersuchten Auerwildgebieten bedeckt die 5. und 6. Altersklasse mindestens 34% der Fläche. Nach den vorliegenden Ermittlungen ist ein hoher Anteil der 5. und noch älteren Altersklassen, meist verbunden mit hoher Vorratshaltung, kennzeichnend für die noch gegenwärtig vom Auerwild besiedelten Kieferngebiete des Lausitzer Flachlandes. Eine Beerkrautbedeckung von mindestens 5% der Fläche, gewöhnlich jedoch zwischen 25 und 100% ist charakteristisch. Bestände mit Unterstand und eine möglichst auf Naturverjüngung orientierte Wirtschaft werden ebenfalls bei vielen Auerwildlebensräumen vorgefunden. An Hand von Beispielen aus der Vergangenheit wird nachgewiesen, daß in Kiefernrevieren höchstwahrscheinlich dem Belassen eines hohen Anteils alter Bestände eine besondere Bedeutung für die Bestandesentwicklung des Auerwildes zukommt.
