Notizen: The structural features of three different graphite fibers were studied via small- and wide-angle x-ray techniques. The experimental evidence is consistent with a sheath/core fiber morphology. Graphitization, degree of orientation, crystallite size, and microporosity were analyzed. Samples included low (AS4) and high (HMS) modulus poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) and melt-spun pitch-based (VSB-16) fibers. By wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD) VSB-16 was found to have the highest degree of graphitization, the highest degree of orientation, and the largest crystallite regions, and AS4 the poorest graphitized structure. The void system in these graphite fibers was investigated by small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). SAXS from glycerin-soaked fibers indicates the scattering at very small angles (2θ〈10 mrad) is dominated by total reflection of x rays at the fiber surface. The pores in HMS and VSB-16 fibers are inaccessible to glycerin and the pores in AS4 fiber are partially accessible. The pores in PAN-based HMS and AS4 fibers are of needlelike shape and those in VSB-16 are ellipsoidal. The porosity is 12.6%, 8.4%, and 4.5% in HMS, AS4, and VSB-16 fibers, respectively. Deviations from Porod's law were observed at large angles and attributed to scattering from fractal aggregates of carbon atoms in the graphite crystallites and/or fractal boundaries of pores. The fractal dimension of the aggregates is 2.3±0.1, 2.8±0.2, and 3.0±0.2 for AS4, HMS, and VSB-16 fibers, respectively. Speculations about the fractal nature of aggregation may stimulate some new insight to the graphitization process, paracrystallinity, and the strength of graphite fibers.

Notizen: Poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPD-T) films have been prepared by continuous extrusion of liquid crystalline 17 percent PPD-T/sulphuric acid solutions through an annular die followed by coagulation, Films extruded without drawdown exhibit some polymer chain orientation in the machine direction. This is increased by uniaxially drawing down films. Films produced with a lubricated conical mandrel sitting between the die and the coagulation bath exhibit an equal biaxial orientation. The uniaxially oriented films exhibit highly anisotropic mechanical properties, while the mandrel-produced film exhibits balanced properties. Heat treatment at 350°C results in significant enhancement of the tensile strength of the mandrel film. Void structures in the films have been investigated by mass density, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Density measurement indicate a void content decreasing with decreasing film thickness and heat treatment. SEM locates micron-size voids in the thickest films, apparently caused by rapid coagulation. SAXS indicates much smaller void sixes which are roughly prolate ellipsoids (long axis in machine direction) for uniaxial films and oblate ellipsoids (short axis in thickness direction) for the mandrel produced films. Various techniques are used to estimate mean void size.

Notizen: An experimental study of the development of phase morphology in incompatible polymer melt blends of polyethylene/polystyrene (PE/PS), polyethylene/polycarbonate (PE/PC), and polyethylene/nylon-6 (PE/N6) is presented. Different temperatures (180°C, 240°C) of mixing and polyethylene molecular- weight levels were used in the PE/PS studies. Little variation in the cross-sectional phase morphology of the PE/PS extrudates was observed with these variables, though the morphology became finer with increased shear rate/stress in capillary die flow. Variations in the longitudinal morphology are observed with continuous filaments of dispersed phase only arising when the dispersed phase has an equal or lower viscosity than the continuous phase. The PE/N6 and PE/PC, especially the former, give coarser morphologies when the N6 and PC are the continuous phases. This was attributed to larger inter-facial tensions. The effect of viscoelasticity was also discussed.

Notizen: The mechanical deformation of polystyrene as it relates to molecular weight parameters was investigated. Mechanical testing consisted of uniaxial tension and compression experiments on a variety of polystyrenes. Such quantities as modulus, proportional limit, and various yield stress measurements were determined on polystyrene samples of controlled number-average molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. A basic tool for the mechanical behavior analysis was the use of a power law equation σ = K∊n to examine the initial nonlinear region of each experimentally determined stress-strain curve. Correlations between mechanical deformation and molecular weight parameters were determined using statistical linear regression analysis. It was generally found for uniaxial tension that mechanical parameters in or near the elastic region were independent of M̄n and MWD, while at larger strains correlations were found. For uniaxial compression, stress maxima and the strain where this occurred increased with increasing MWD. Otherwise, mechanical parameter changes in uniaxial compression did not occur with changing M̄n and MWD. Finally, a direct comparison of tension versus compression showed only the initial moduli to be the same. All other mechanical parameters showed significantly differing values, indicating different deformation mechanisms operating in tension verus compression. The analysis of this behavior from both a mechanics and molecular weight viewpoint provides some insight about glassy polymer deformation processes on the microscopic level.

Notizen: An experimental study of the solution properties of poly(m-phenyleneisophthalamide) (MPD-I) in dimethylacetamide (DMA)/LiCl solutions is presented. Differential refractometry, light scattering photometry, dilute and concentrated solution viscometry, and normal stress experiments are reported and interpreted. This polymer in the concentration range investigated does not exhibit mesophase behavior in contrast to its para-linked analog. Generally, it behaves as a flexible polymer molecule; however, its capacity to become a polyelectrolyte strongly influences its behavior in the presence of LiCl. MPD-I is self-associated when dissolved in pure DMA but dissociates in DMA/LiCl solvent systems. The Zimm plots of MPD-I in DMA/LiCl solutions show distortion, probably due to polymer-salt interactions.

Notizen: A new process for making equal biaxially oriented films from liquid crystalline solutions of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPD-T) is described. The process involves extruding solutions of PPD-T/H2SO4 through an annular die and over an oil-coated mandrel into a coagulation bath. The films were studied using wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Tensile stress-strain properties were obtained on samples cut at various directions in the plane of the film. Biaxially oriented films which possess equal properties in the various directions in the plane of the film were produced. Moduli of 2.3 × 109 Pa and tensile strengths of 9.6 × 107 Pa were obtained in the plane of the film. Films with unequal biaxial orientation were also produced. These tend to have higher modulus/tensile strength in the direction of major orientation, the machine direction (up to 8.3 × 109 Pa/2.5 × 108 Pa), but become brittle in the transverse direction.

Notizen: An experimental characterization and processing study of redissolved Kevlar® and poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide)/sulfuric acid solutions is reported. Polarized light microscopy studies show the development of an anisotropic phase. When two phases coexist, negatively birefringent spherulites are observed. At higher concentrations, a single phase of coalescing spherulites is seen and following melting and subsequent cooling, nematic (threadlike) structures are observed. Viscosity and normal stresses were measured at various concentrations and temperatures. A yield stress is exhibited at room temperature. Both room temperature and 60°C viscosity vs concentration curves display maxima. The solution in concentration ranges from 2 to 12 percent have been extruded as ribbons and as annular blown tubular film. Processing variables and problems are discussed. Wide angle X-ray scattering patterns of films show orientation. Tensile properties have been measured on films.

Notizen: An experimental study of shear viscosity η(\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \dot \gamma $\end{document}), principal normal stress difference N1(\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \dot \gamma $\end{document}), storage modulus G′(ω), dynamic viscosity η′(ω), and filament elongation to break LB is reported for solutions of several polyamides; namely, nylon 66 in sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and formic acid (HCOOH), poly(γ-benzyl-L-glutamate) (PγBLG) in m-cresol, Nomex in H2SO4 and dimethylacetamide (DMA)/5% LiCl, and Kevlar in H2SO4 at 25 and 60°C. The variation of properties with concentration, polymer backbone and chain configuration, and solvent type is emphasized. The nylon 66/H2SO4 solutions have higher viscosity, normal stresses, and storage modulus than the HCOOH solutions of equivalent concentrations. The Nomex/H2SO4 solutions have higher viscosity and higher normal stresses and storage modulus than the DMA/LiCl solutions at equivalent concentrations. The significance of polymer chain backbone rigidity in forming liquid crystalline phases in Kevlar and PγBLG solutions is discussed and its influence on flow properties in indicated. These systems allow polarized light to pass through crossed polarizers and show maxima in viscosity-concentration data. The 25°C Kelvar solutions are distinctive in that they exhibit apparent yield stress values. This gives distinctive shear flow and oscillatory data. Filament elongation-to-break data show Kelvar 〉 Nomex 〉 nylon 66 in H2SO4 solutions for the order of spinnability.
