Notes: Abstract An analytical method was developed for the determination of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) in the presence of trimethoprim (TMP) by normal fluorescence. When both analytes are present a selective derivatization with fluorescamine of SMZ gives an intense fluorescent derivative with no interference from the other compound. The reaction was optimized to obtain the best analytical performance. The detection limit and the lower limit of quantitation of SMZ in the reaction medium was 5.2 ng/mL. The intra-day precision (relative standard deviation) was 1.51% for a 100 ng/mL SMZ standard solution and the inter-day precision over 7 days for a 100 ng/mL solution in the presence of 20 ng/mL TMP solution was 2.5%. The method has been applied to three pharmaceutical preparations containing both compounds, without any separation steps required.

Notes: Abstract A simple, rapid and reproducible method for the determination of some pesticide residues in water was developed using micro liquid-liquid extraction and gas chromatography - mass spectrometry with selected ion monitoring (GC/MS-SIM). The chlorinated insecticides α- and β-endosulfan and endosulfan-sulfate as well as the synthetic pyrethroids bifenthrin, permethrin, cypermethrin, fenvalerate and deltamethrin can be separated from a 500 mL sample water extracted with 0.5 mL of n-hexane containing anthracene-d10 as internal standard without clean-up in only 13 min. The recovery efficiencies of the tested compounds yielded more than 93.0% at a fortification level of 5 ng mL–1 and their relative standard deviations were between 1.9 and 11.7%. Detection limit of each compound ranged between 3 and 35 pg mL–1. The method was applied to ground, sea and tap waters from Almería (Spain). The solubilities in water at 20° C were determined.

Notes: Abstract A method for the determination of the fungicide thiabendazole (TBZ) by micellar-stabilized room-temperature phosphorescence is described. It does not require any separation step and allows the direct determination of the fungicide in canned pineapple samples. The effect of various experimental conditions is discussed in detail. The analytical curve of thiabendazole gives a linear dynamic range of 23.8–500.0 ng mL–1 and a detection limit of 23.8 ng mL–1. Recoveries of 103.9 and 89.2% for syrup and canned pineapple pulp, respectively, were obtained for 250 ng mL–1 thiabendazole.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Methode beruht auf der Bildung eines fluoreszierenden 1∶1-Chelates von Mg(II) mit 1,8-Dihydroxyanthrachinon.
Notes: Summary A fluorimetric method for the determination of Mg(II), based on the formation of a fluorescent 1∶1 chelate with 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone, is described. With 90% ethanol in ammoniacal medium, the fluorescent complex has excitation maxima at 470, 480 and 495 nm and emission maximum at 600 nm. The logarithm of apparent formation constant of the complex is 4.68. The calibration graph is linear over the range 5–350 ppb Mg(II).

Notes: Abstract A photometric and fluorimetric study of the acid-base behavior of 2,2′-diquinolyl and 2,2′,2″-terpyridyl was performed. In sulfuric acid medium, the doubly charged 2,2′-diquinolynium ion undergoes the first dissociation atH 0=0.20±0.09, as determined by fluorimetry (λex=336 nm, λem=424 nm). Photometric titration is less accurate because of the overlapping of the absorption spectra. The second dissociation constant of 2,2′-diquinolyl was determined by fluorimetric titration (λex=336 nm, λem=420 nm), obtaining a value of 3.67±0.03. The triply charged 2,2′,2″-terpyridyl molecule was found to undergo the first dissociation atH 0=−7.17±0.04, as determined by fluorimetric titration (λex=316 nm, λem=350 nm), in aqueous sulfuric acid medium. Photometric titration (λ=335 nm) was performed in the presence of 6.5% ethanol because of the low solubility of the compound in water. In this ethanolic∶water medium, a value of the dissociation constant atH 0=−7.39±0.03 was calculated. The second dissociation constant was determined to be 2.81±0.12 by photometric titration at 285 nm, and values of 4.03±0.26 and 4.16±0.20 were found for the third dissociation constant by photometric titrations at 320 and 295 nm, in 10% ethanol, in close agreement with previously reported values. The fluorimetric titration profile obtained by exciting at 274 nm and measuring the fluorescence emission at 350 nm, in the zone betweenH 0=−3 and pH=10, is complicated by the several equilibria involved.
