Soixante-sept doryphores adultes furent déterrés avant l'émergence, au printemps 1990, d'une plantation de pomme de terre de l'année précédente. Cinq adultes deM. aberrans et deux adultesM. doryphorae furent prélevés de sept de ces doryphores. Ceci constitue la première information concernant l'hivernation deM. aberrans etM. doryphorae.
    Notes: Abstract The overwintering biology ofMyiopharus aberrans (Townsend) andMyiopharus doryphorae (Riley), tachinid parasitoids of the Colorado potato beetle, was investigated. Sixty seven overwintered Colorado potato beetle adults were dug from the soil before beetle emergence in the spring of 1990 from a field that had been planted to potatoes the previous year. Five adultM. aberrans and two adultM. doryphorae flies were reared from seven beetles. This is the first record of howM. aberrans andM. doryphorae flies overwinter.

    Notes: Abstract Overwintering Colorado potato beetles (Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say)) were concentrated primarily within woody borders, and mortality was lower in borders than in potato fields. After overwintering, only 15–44% of live beetles were in the potato fields. In experiments with small plots, colonization of fields from woody borders was reduced ∼60% by a trap crop, either treated with adulticide or with beetles collected daily. Such trap crops, or simply pitfall traps to prevent colonization from woody borders, could significantly reduce early-season adult numbers and subsequent larval populations. However, success is dependent on the local densities of overwintered beetles, and the prevalence of arrestment behavior in the case of trap crops.

    Notes: Abstract The abilities ofMyiopharus doryphorae (Riley) andM. aberrans (Townsend) (Diptera: Tachinidae) to discriminate between parasitized and non-parasitized Colorado potato beetle (host)Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) larvae, were investigated under laboratory and field conditions. Laboratory experiments showed that bothMyiopharus species have a significantly greater frequency for larvipositing in non-parasitized hosts over parasitized ones. Direct field observations of larvipositional behavior of bothMyiopharus species over three growing seasons showed effective restraint from larviposition into parasitized hosts, while larviposition into nonparasitized ones occurred readily. Avoidance of previously-parasitized hosts occurred after the larvipositing flies briefly landed on host larvae without attempting to insert the larvipositor. The low levels of superparasitism which occurred in the caged experiments and in the field appeared to be due to a breakdown of the larvipositing parasitoids' restraint when they met only parasitized hosts or when many parasitoids competed for reduced numbers of hosts late in the season.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Fünf Fallentypen wurden auf ihre Fängigkeit für adulte O. simplex geprüft. Es handelte sich dabei um verschiedenfarbige, beleimte Stangen, um Schlüpfkegel, um beleimte Alsynite-Aufprallscheiben, um durchsichtige Acrylscheiben mit Auffangbecken und um beleimte durchsichtige Acrylscheiben. Von allen Fallen fingen die farbigen Stangen am besten und zwar vor allem diejenigen, die mit zwei gelben Farben und diejenigen, die mit Limonengrün gestrichen waren. Alle drei Farben reflektieren viel Licht der Wellenlänge von ungefähr 550 nm. Der verwendete Tanglefoot-Leim hat einen geringen Einfluss auf die prozentuale Reflexion.
    Notes: Abstract Five trap types (colored stakes, inverted cone trap, Alsynite® impact trap, sticky window pane trap and reservoir trap) were evaluated for their capacity to trap adult O. simplex. Colored stakes (yellow, federal safety yellow and lime green) coated with Tanglefoot trapped more flies than the other traps. These three colors and white have high reflectance of wavelengths at 500–600 nm. Tanglefoot has little effect on the % reflectance of the different colored stakes, yet Tanglefoot® does have a different effect on reflectance than Tacktrap.®

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé L'étude de la perception visuelle et de la reconnaissance des formes par les D. radicum adultes a été réalisée en utilisant des pièges jaunes gluants de quatre formes différentes comme leurres de plantes. Des pièges en croix, en disque et en Y ont permis la capture des mêmes nombres de mouches. Plus de femelles ont été capturées avec des pièges en croix qu'avec des pièges rectangulaires verticaux ou horizontaux. Les captures n'ont pas augmenté avec des pièges bordés de noir. Des disques de 8 cm de diamètre disposés au niveau du sol ont permis la capture de plus de femelles que des disques à 40 cm au-dessus du sol. La capture par piège a été supérieure avec des pièges de 11,2 et 13,8 cm de diamètre qu'avec ceux de 8 cm, mais moindre par unité de surface. Des essences volatiles de moutarde ont été ajoutées aux pièges en croix comme appâts simples ou composés. Les pièges avec appâtes composés n'ont pas été significativement plus efficaces que les pièges à appâts simples. Les pièges jaunes appâts avec de l'isothiocyanata ont entraîné la capture de 4 à 7 fois plus de mouches que des pièges en plastique transparent appâtés avec de l'allylisothiocyanate (ANCS). Les résultats ont montré que des disques ou des croix jaunes appâtés avec de l'ANCS au niveau du sol permettent d'organiser un avertissement agricole contre D. radicum. Les principaux facteurs intervenant dans l'atterrissage des femelles de D. radicum semblent être la couleur du substrat, l'élévation audessus du sol, le contraste visuel, la présence de substance de l'hôte dans le voisinage, et l'aire d'attractivité de la couleur. En conclusion, il est exact de considérer que la perception de l'hôte est provoquée chez quelques insectes par une réponse complexe à des stimuli multicanaux.
    Notes: Abstract Visual host finding and form recognition by the cabbage root fly, Delia radicum, were studied using four shapes of yellow sticky traps as plant models. Cross, disc, and Y traps caught similar numbers of flies. Cross traps caught more females than ‘vertical’ or ‘horizontal’ rectangular traps. Black borders did not increase rectangle trap catches. Discs (8 cm diam.) at ground level caught more females than discs at 40 cm above ground. Larger discs (11.2 and 13.8 cm diam.) caught more females per trap than 8 cm diam. discs, but not as many per unit area. Volatile mustard oils were added to sticky cross traps as single and multiple-component baits. Traps with multiple-component baits did not consistently catch more females than single baited traps. Yellow traps baited with isothiocyanates caught 4–7 times as many females as clear plastic allylisothiocyanate (ANCS)-baited traps. Results indicated yellow discs or crosses at ground level beited with ANCS effectively monitored female D. radicum. Main factors affecting landing of female D. radicum are suggested to be color of substrate, height above ground, presence of host volatiles in vicinity, visual prominence, and area of ‘attractive’ color. The view that host finding in some insects is mediated by complex responses to multichannel stimuli was supported.

Les niveaux de non viabilité indiquaient un pourcentage supplémentaire de 2,8% d'hôtes tués par «host-feeding» pour un impact total de 6,4%. Le lâcher en 1988 de 126.300 parasitoïdes contre la 1re génération d'hôtes dans un champs de pommes de terre de 0,4 ha au même endroit, produisait uniquement des niveaux légèrement supérieurs de parasitisme (10,6%) et d'«host-feeding» (2,0%). Le lâcher en 1987 de 32.800 hyménoptères contre la 2e génération d'œufs entraînait uniquement 0,7% de parasitisme et 0,3% d'«host-feeding» par suite de la toxicité des résidus d'une seule application de fenvalerate (PydrinR) utilisée pour lutter contre la cicadelle de la pomme de terreEmpoasca fabae (Harris). Le lâcher en 1988 de 47.400 hyménoptères contre la 2e génération d'hôtes entraînait, en l'absence de toute application insecticide, 34,4 % de parasitisme et 16,1 % d'«host-feeding» pour un impact total de 50,5%. La différence dans les niveaux de parasitisme entre les générations de l'hôte supporte l'idée que les adultes d'E. puttleri réclament à l'extérieur une source d'hydrates de carbone tels que le miellat de pucerons pour se reproduire. Dans l'Etat du Massachusetts, les populations de pucerons de la pomme de terre, ne se développent typiquement pas jusqu'à la fin de la première génération larvaire. La méthode «de recrutementα deVan Driesche & Bellow (1988) pouvait être une approche satisfaisante pour déterminer les résultats de lâchers croissants de parasitoïdes.

In Massachusetts, aphid populations in potato typically do not develop until the end of the 1st larval generation. The recruitment method ofVan Driesche & Bellows (1988) proved to be a satisfactory approach for determining results of augmentative parasitoid releases.
