    Notes: The effects of proton (H+), deuteron (D+), and helium (He+) irradiations at 2.0 MeV on the Curie temperature of amorphous Fe20Ni60P14B6 are reported and compared to thermal annealing effects. Changes in Curie temperature are reported following isochronal anneals (5-h duration) at temperatures up to 325 °C and following room-temperature irradiations. The Curie temperature increase for samples irradiated with H+ is greater than that observed with D+, which is greater than that observed with He+. Reversibility of Curie temperature has been reported by other workers for thermal annealing of various amorphous magnetic alloys. In this paper, reversibility of Curie temperature is reported for samples successively irradiated with H+, He+, and then D+. A qualitative interpretation of irradiation effects is given in terms of transient heating about the track of a projectile ion.

    Notes: Abstract Individual spongy mesophyll cells in green areas of variegated Coleus blumei leaves were injected with the symplast-mobile dye lucifer yellow and its movement to other cell types was followed with fluorescence microscopy. In 13 trials, the dye remained in the injected cell twice, moved only to other mesophyll cells five times, and moved up to and along minor veins six times. Where extensive movement of the dye occurred, the tissue was fixed with 4% glutaraldehyde, dehydrated, embedded in plastic, sectioned at 3 μm, and examined again with fluorescence microscopy. The dye was found in abaxial bundle-sheath cells for up to 200 μm or more distant from the site of injection near the minor vein, but no convincing evidence was found for its presence in the vascular tissue itself. It thus appears that superficial whole-mount views of lucifer yellow movement along leaf minor veins cannot be taken as certain evidence for symplastic transport of the dye into and along the vascular tissues.

    Notes: A computer program, written in Whetstone Algol, is described for handling the arithmetical operations involved in a precision method of determining lattice spacings from Kossel diffraction patterns. The interpretation treats the Kossel pattern as a three-dimensional array of intersecting cones with a common vertex and depends on the fact that when three or more positions of a cone generator are established, its axis and semivertex angle are defined. The theory and experimental requirements of the method are outlined and the functions of the steps in the computer program are described. The full program, together with data sheets and print-out of results for a typical calculation is available on request. A subsidiary program is also available to provide a graphical display of relevant parts of the results.

    Notes: Abstract The photosynthetic tissue of green portions of variegated Coleus blumei leaves consists primarily of palisade and spongy parenchyma cells as well as bundle-sheath cells. The moderate numbers of plasmodesmata connecting these cells may be sufficient to provide a symplastic pathway for assimilates moving toward the minor veins. The minor veins, however, are unusual in having two sets of phloem-loading cells which have little symplastic continuity with one another: one consisting of large, peripherally located intermediary cells, and a second set made up of smaller, usually more internal companion cells, both sets having their associated sieve-tube members. The intermediary cells are connected to vascular-parenchyma and bundle-sheath cells by unique branched plasmodesmata which are particularly abundant at the bundle-sheath interface. In addition, numerous plasmodesmata-pore connections occur between the intermediary cells and their associated sieve-tube members. Neither the intermediary cells nor their sieve-tube members plasmolyze when treated with 1.4 M mannitol, whereas mesophyll and vascular-parenchyma cells plasmolyze at 0.5 M and bundle-sheath cells at 0.6 M mannitol. By contrast, the companion cells and their associated sieve-tube members are symplastically isolated from the bundle-sheath cells and the sieve-tube-intermediary-cell complexes, and share few plasmodesmata with the vascular-parenchyma cells. Moreover, the companion cells plasmolyze at 1.1 M mannitol and their sieve tubes at 1.3 M. The intermediary-cell-sieve-tube complex thus appears to be structurally equipped to load assimilates entirely via the symplast, while the sieve-tube-companion-cell complex is probably loaded from the apoplast.

    Notes: Most published “interaction measures” can produce misleading results and often do not measure the true closed-loop interaction. Therefore, closed-loop transmittances are defined mathematically as direct, parallel, disturbance, and interaction transfer functions and it is shown that the direct Nyquist array design method includes an excellent basis for interaction analysis.

    Notes: Selected state and/or output variables can be made undisturbable, i.e., invariant, to arbitrary, unmeasured changes in specific input variables by properly designed feedback and feedforward controllers. Simulation and experimental applications to a computer-controlled, pilot plant evaporator gave results superior to conventional controllers.Necessary and sufficient conditions for undisturbability are expressed in terms of the structure of the coefficient matrices of the state space model and equivalently of the corresponding eigenvector matrix. The design procedure normally includes arbitrary specification of all closed-loop eigenvalues and up to r elements of each eigenvector, where r is the number of control (manipulated) variables.

    Notes: Marshall's method of model reduction (1966) neglects the modes of the high order system which contribute little to the overall system response. This approach is extended to handle complex and/or repeated eigenvalues and is then modified so that pure time delays can be included in the control variables of the reduced order model. Open- and closed-loop examples show that the inclusion of the time delays tends to compensate for the eliminated modes and leads to better agreement between the high and low order models.

    Notes: A study of the electron diffraction diagram of Valonia ventricosa cellulose has confirmed the conclusions reached by Honjo and Watanabe concerning the size of its unit cell. The a and c axes of the cell are twice the length of those usually accepted for cellulose I. The symmetry of the cell is P1, but the evidence available at present does not allow a decision to be made concerning the symmetry of the molecular chains. Consideration of x-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopic data suggests that bacterial cellulose probably has the same unit cell as Valonia ventricosa, but that other native celluloses may have different cells.
