    Notes: Summary Variational principles are important tools for the approximate solution of boundary-value problems. There are many types of variational principles, and each has its advantages and disadvantages. In this paper we show how to use a combination of variational principles, each for a given subregion of the underlying region of space, so as to best utilize the chief benefits of the individual principles. Such a patched principle is particularly useful in solving transonic flow problems, where we use different principles in the elliptic and hyperbolic regions. We present the results of some numerical experiments for the Tricomi problem. These seem to indicate that our patched principle, when used in conjunction with the finite element method, leads to accuracy which is second-order in the mesh spacing, as compared to the standard numerical methods of solving this problem, which are only first-order.

    Notes: A least squares method is presented for computing approximate solutions of indefinite partial differential equations of the mixed type such as those that arise in connection with transonic flutter analysis. The mehod retains the advantages of finite difference schemes namely simplicity and sparsity of the resulting matrix system. However, it offers some great advantages over finite difference schemes. First, the method is insensitive to the value of the forcing frequency i.e., the resulting matrix system is always symmetric and positive definite,. As a result, iterative methods may be successfully employed to solve the matrix system, thus taking full advantage of the sparsity. Furthermore, the method is insensitive to the type of the partial differential equation, i.e., the computational algorithm is the same in elliptic and hyperbolic regions. In this work the method is formulated and numerical results for model problems are presented. Some theoretical aspects of least squares approximations are also discussed.

    Notes: In this article we study Galerkin finite element approximations to integral equations of the Volterra type. Our prime concern is the noncoercive case, which is not covered by the standard finite element theory. The question of rates of convergence is studied for the case where an exact stiffness matrix is available, as well as the case where the latter is approximated via quadrature rules. The optimality of these rules is also considered from the point of view of the effect the choice of the quadrature has on the overall rate of convergence. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: In this article least squares approximations to Volterra integral equations are considered, both with exact integration and with quadrature. Optimal error estimates are derived, and it is shown that the same order of convergence is obtained in both cases with only modest requirements on the quadrature rule used in the latter.
