Summary The more the environmental conditions are away from the optimum of the growth conditions, the larger is the influence of physiologically active substances on the growth and the yield of plants. The mechanism of the effect of such compounds, among them are also the lignin degradation products, which are formed during the humification, and their oxidation products on the increased growth of plants is caused by a weak uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation as was demonstrated in some papers before. By the humification of plant material or by the microbial attack on plant residues as well as from isolated lignin currently lignin degradation products are formed from which a larger number is known in their chemical constitution. Investigations with 14-carbon labelled fractions from the humus or with differently labelled vanillic acid, have shown that the uptake of those substances is possible so far as they are able to migrate through the cell membrane. Vanillic acid is transformed in the plant metabolism; a compound has been found which is considered as p-hydroxybenzoic acid according to its properties. The stability of fractions of humus or lignin degradation products respectively has been investigated in sterile or in not sterile media for the investigation of their uptake. The observed transformations of different lignin degradation products are shown in some reaction schemes. Different phenols or quinones respectively are formed during those reactions; these compounds have an effect on the plant metabolism in lower concentration as the lignin degradation products. A part of the effect of the humic substances of the soils on growth and yield of plants after their uptake by roots may be due to an influence on the metabolism by the lignin degradation products.
