Notes: Abstract Single-gene mutants of Escherichia coli defective in aerobactin biosynthesis were incubated under non-growing conditions for 2 h with radiolabelled lysine. Analysis of the intermediates produced suggested that acetylation of lysine may be the first step in aerobactin production.

Notes: Abstract Divergent perceptions (or “disagreements”) within the mother-daughter dyad and the association of such divergence with daughter's affective and behavioral well-being were examined in the current study. One hundred sixty-one mother-daughter dyads (daughters aged 14–18 years; mothers aged 37–59 years) completed paper- and-pencil measures assessing their perceptions of family cohesion and family conflict; daughters also rated their own depressive affect and dieting behavior. While the means for groups of mothers and daughters on family cohesion and conflict were similar, dyads varied substantially in their level of agreement. Disagreements on family cohesion were associated with daughter dieting behavior; maternal employment status was more highly associated with daughter depressive affect than either family conflict or cohesion. Findings are discussed in terms of their implications for studying the divergent perceptions of family members, and for family systems and relationship approaches to understanding the family.

Notes: Abstract The study compares coping styles of 50 learning disabled and nonlearning dis-abled adolescents and their parents. Analyses indicate that learning disabled adolescents show less ability to appraise a source of stress and seek information in the various domains with which they are expected to cope. Also, they reveal a higher level of pessimism about problems in academic-related domains. Coping patterns of parents of learning disabled adolescents do not show clear differences from parents of nonlearning disabled. Yet mothers of learning disabled adolescents tend more to seek and accept help. Learning disabled adolescents' coping is clearly related to coping or more specifically to difficulties in coping of their parents. Results are discussed in the context of the special difficulties of the learning disabled during adolescence and the role their parents play during this developmental stage.

Notes: Abstract Aging, in the context of modern American culture, is as much a social process as it is a biological fact. It is because we perceive the characteristics of old age to be threatening to our common values that we relegate the elderly to “out-group” status and attempt to manage them, much as we do the members of other deviant populations. The result is the creation of a self-abasing elderly role, to which the aging are in many ways forced to conform. If our ministry is to affirm the humanity of older men and women, it is necessary that we cease to look upon them as complexes of typical traits. Only then can we begin to make the healing love of Christ present for them.

Notes: The vibrational Raman optical activity (ROA) spectra of di- and tri-L-alanine in the range 650-1750 cm-1 have been measured in H2O and D2O solution at high, neutral, and low pH and pD. Corresponding ROA spectra for tetra- and penta-L-alanine have also been obtained, but over a more restricted set of pH and pD conditions. There are similarities with the ROA spectrum of L-alanine below ∼ 1200 cm-1, but the spectra are very different above this wavenumber due to the influence of the vibrational coordinates of the peptide group. The similar overall appearance of the di-, tri-, and tetrapeptide ROA under selected conditions of pH and pD, and of all four peptide ROA spectra in DCl and HCl solutions, in the backbone skeletal stretch region ∼ 1050-1200 cm-1 and the extended amide III region ∼ 1250-1350 cm-1, suggests that the backbone conformation is approximately the same in all four structures. One difference, however, is a shift of a large positive ROA band in H2O at ∼ 1341 cm-1 in the dipeptide, assigned to Cα-H and in-plane N-H deformations, down to ∼ 1331 cm -1 in the tripeptide and to ∼ 1315 cm-1 in the tetrapeptide and pentapeptide (the last in HCl due to insufficient solubility in H2O), which indicates increasing delocalization of the corresponding normal mode with increasing chain length. Our results do not support the suggestion that stabilizing interactions of the zwitterionic end groups in tri-L-alanine at neutral pH leads to a different solution structure to that at high pH. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
