    Notes: Abstract  Three dolines (sinkholes), each representing different land uses (crop, grass, and forest) in a karst area in East Tennesse, were selected to determine soil erosional and depositional rates. Three methods were used to estimate the rates: fallout radiocesium (137Cs) redistribution, buried surface soil horizons (Ab horizon), and the revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE). When 137Cs redistribution was examined, the average soil erosion rates were calculated to be 27 t ha–1 yr–1 at the cropland, 3 t ha–1 yr–1 at the grassland, and 2 t ha–1 yr–1 at the forest. By comparison, cropland erosion rate of 2.6 t ha–1 yr–1, a grassland rate of 0.6 t ha–1 yr–1, and a forest rate of 0.2 t ha–1 yr–1 were estimated by RUSLE. The 137Cs method expressed higher rates than RUSLE because RUSLE tends to overestimate low erosion rates and does not account for deposition. The buried surface horizons method resulted in deposition rates that were 8 t ha–1 yr–1 (during 480 yr) at the cropland, 12 t ha–1 yr–1 (during 980 yr) at the grassland, and 4 t ha–1 yr–1 (during 101 yr) at the forest site. By examining 137Cs redistribution, soil deposition rates were found to be 23 t ha–1 yr–1 at the cropland, 20 t ha–1 yr–1 at the grassland, and 16 t ha–1 yr–1 at the forest site. The variability in deposition rates was accounted for by temporal differences;137Cs expressed deposition during the last 38 yr, whereas Ab horizons represented deposition during hundreds of years. In most cases, land use affected both erosion and deposition rates – the highest rates of soil redistribution usually representing the cropland and the lowest, the forest. When this was not true, differences in the rates were attributed to differences in the size, shape, and closure of the dolines.

    Notes: The effect of vortex generators in the form of tabs on the penetration and spreading of a jet in a cross-flow has been studied experimentally. It is found that the tab has very little effect when placed on the leeward side, i.e., on the downstream edge of the jet nozzle relative to the free-stream flow. A study of the static pressure distribution reveals significantly lower pressures on the leeward side. Thus, when placed on that side the tab does not produce a "pressure hill'' of sufficient magnitude that is the primary source of streamwise vorticity in the flow field over the tab. This qualitatively explains the ineffectiveness. In comparison, there is a significant effect on the flow field when the tab is placed on the windward side. The sense of vorticity generated by the tab in the latter configuration is opposite to that of the bound vortex pair that otherwise characterizes the flow. Thus, the strength of the bound vortex pair is diminished and the jet penetration is reduced. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A geometric feature of the vorticity field in the near-wall region is educed from an analysis of time-resolved spanwise vorticity measurements. The results of this analysis indicate the existence of a region near the wall in which the instantaneous z component of the vorticity vector is virtually always in the direction indicated by the mean shear. In accordance with the solenoidal condition of the vorticity field, this observed physical feature represents a limitation on the spatial structure of the vorticity field in the near-wall region. The present results also reinforce the conclusion of Klewicki (Ph.D. dissertation, Michigan State University, 1989) that, for the momentum deficit thickness Reynolds number range 1010≤Rθ≤4850, the statistical properties of the spanwise vorticity component are invariant under an inner variable normalization for y+ less than about 40.

    Notes: Abstract A novel and relatively simple flow facility was designed and fabricated to study the instability characteristics of a slit-jet flow field. The performance of the flow facility has been found to be statisfactory. The operation of this gravity driven, finite duration, “steady” flow facility was based upon an inviscid flow model. This technique to establish a finite duration “steady” flow field is quite general in nature and can be easily adapted to other flow fields of interest.

    Notes: Abstract Quiescent male gypsy moths (Lymantria dispar) exposed in a wind tunnel to either pulsed (0.5-, 2- or 5-sec on, followed by a two-fold time interval off) or continuous streams of synthetic pheromone responded similarly in the proportions and latencies of wing fanning. Similarly, upwind anemotactic flight tracks in pulsed (1-sec on and 1-sec off) and continuous plumes of pheromone were indistinguishable. These data suggest that in the gypsy moth (1) pulsed pheromone stimuli would not lower the threshold, despite the improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio; and (2) temporal modulation of the pheromone plume at 1-sec intervals does not alter the “preprogrammed” upwind flight pattern.
